What Makes It Awesome

We found a brand that’s been reinventing traditional Indian fabrics in a fresh, new way. The brand’s all about upholding the timeless heritage of Indian handlooms, and adding a flair to them that elevates them, and makes them a little more contemporary. Founder Raji Mavuri’s Label RaMa brand merges ancestral craftsmanship with designs that casually defy traditional fashion norms and challenge rigid gender roles.

Label RaMa thoughtfully curates fabrics from rural artisans, and they have a huge penchant for ensuring that the clothes are of really good quality. We had a look at their 'Wanderlust' collection that features Jamdani, Khadi, and Muslin fabrics.

This collection is designed for the globe trotter, who won’t go for mass produced, and is eager to shop local. It's a conscious form of luxury — given that Label RaMa garment takes anywhere from seven to 48 hours of painstaking work. There pieces are named after destinations around the globe.

For instance, the 'New York' is an easygoing jumpsuit crafted for walking around Times Square in the summertime. The 'Kochi' dress is reminiscent of what you’d wear to the iconic Biennale — airy, comfy and still whimsical. The brand also does table runners and napkins, and we expect them to foray deeper into the world of home furnishings with rich fabrics that have a distinct cultural legacy.

Note that the brand isn’t exactly affordable, with pieces starting at INR 4,500 or so. But hey, if you’re in a place where you’re done with fast fashion, and want to invest in clothing you’ll wear for decades, Label RaMa is a great place to start!
