This Gudi Padwa, Try These Vegetarian Maharashtrian Thalis!

The information in this post might be outdated

Mumbai is heaven for foodies, thanks to all the varieties available—right from the street food stalls to fine-dine establishments dishing out mouth-watering dishes. So, if you’re in the mood to enjoy some good Maharashtrian fare, complete with the warmth of garam masala, the spicy peppery tinge, the sweetness of curried onions or comfort of coconut-milk curries, Mumbai definitely has something for you too!

Check out these restaurants that serve some of the best vegetarian Maharashtrian thalis in the city.

Swad Thali, Thane West

At under INR 300, you can enjoy a satisfying Maharashtrian meal at this eatery in Thane. We’ve heard that the food at Swad Thali is good enough to make the SoBo snob travel all the way to Thane for a bite of it. If you’re in the mood to enjoy dal, puri, papad, dahi, bhaji, kothimbir wadi and bhaat, you know where to go.

Price: INR 200 upwards

Mama Kane, Dadar West

Mama Kane will never go out of style! This eatery in Dadar is more than 100 years old! Started with the idea of bringing the coastal and authentic Maharashtrian cuisine to Mumbai at affordable rates, this establishment has now built a legacy that boasts of serving some of the best vegetarian Maharashtrian fare in town.

Price: Their Mini Lunch starts at a humble INR 77, and up!

Purepur Kolhapur, New Panvel

Their veg thali options start from INR 150 only, and we love this restaurant for a quick lunch during work hours. Their service is prompt, so you don’t end up spending too much time here. They also deliver around the area, so if you’re short on time but craving for a good vegetarian Maharashtrian thali, order in—Purepur Kolhapur's got a branch in Matunga as well.

Price: INR 250 for the vegetarian meal, and the non-vegetarian meals start at INR 390.

Chaitanya, Dadar West

Lovers of authentic Konkani and Maharashtrian cuisines, we have found just the right place for you! The vegetarian thali at Chaitanya will introduce you to the authentic flavours of the region with every bite. It’s extremely budget-friendly, and thanks to the quick service you don’t end up taking too long either. Great for a lunch break if you’re working around the Siddhivinayak Temple area!

Price: INR 200 upwards for the veg thali and INR 340 onwards for the non-vegetarian thalis

Konkan Swad, Malad and Goregaon West

A Malad/Goregaon icon, Konkan Swad is mostly known for seafood, but we swear by the vegetarian thali! Priced at a (super) modest INR 95, the vegetarian thali's got two vegetable preparations, two chapatis, a lentil-based dish, a bowl full of solkadhi, and a generous mound of rice.

Give this one a skip if the smell of meat/seafood bothers you, though.

Price: INR 220 for a vegetarian thali

Mi Marathi, Vile Parle East

Be prepared to be just a little bit thrown off by Mi Marathi's menu if you're not proficient in the language. You've still got good reason to rejoice, though—this place is 100% vegetarian! Quite famous in the area, Mi Marathi is almost always crowded. The thalis are stellar, and you've got plenty of options to choose from.

Price: INR 160 upwards for the mini thali

MH-09 Shetkari, Thane

This one's an import that's come all the way from Kolhapur! After serving up delicious, spicy regional fare for 18 years, they've parked themselves in Thane, at Panch Pakhadi. While MH-09 Shetkari's known more for its non-vegetarian food, the vegetarian thali here is pretty great, too!

Price: INR 130

Ladu Samrat, Kandivali East

Ladu Samrat is most people's go-to for Maharashtrian fare in Kandivali. Of course, they ace the misals, thalipeeths and the vada pavs, but their humble vegetarian thali is to die for, too. With pared back, simple flavours that remind you of home (whether you're a Maharashtrian or not). Head here for the home-style thali when you're trying to eat healthier, but still want to experiment with cuisines!

Price: INR 199 onwards
