We’re already into the second month of the year and it’s bringing something way more exciting to the city! The National Centre for the Performing Arts is hosting the Spectrum Dance Festival on 7th, 16th and 28th February - think global rhythms, creative geniuses and pure magic — all on one stage! Whether you’re drawn to classical Indian or contemporary, or a fusion of global styles there’s something to make your heart dance!
The festival kicks off on 7th February with a grand performance by Vaibhav Arekar, one of India’s leading male Bharatanatyam soloists, who along with his troupe will be taking the stage with his latest choreography, Naama Mhane…, a breathtaking exploration of Sant Namdev’s spiritual journey. Arekar has trained under maestros such as Saroja Srinath, Thangamani Nagarajan and Dr. Kanak Rele is the founder of Sankhya Dance Company. This performance portrays the spiritual awakening of Sant Namdev and explores his journey from an individual identity to a broader philosophical concept. The choreography uses traditional Bharatanatyam interpretations, abstract narrations and classical motifs to lift both the dancer and the audience to a state of ‘bhakti’ or devotion. This presentation is supported by Voltas as part of their CSR initiative. The second act of the evening is Nrityavyidhyam – a variety of dances in the Uday Shankar Style of Dance by Tanusree Shankar Dance Company. A dancer of international repute, Tanusree Shankar has trained under Amala Shankar and developed a unique choreography based on Uday Shankar’s style of dance. Nrityavyvidhyam – a variety of dances, is a collection of short thematic pieces based on the environment, the social milieu, and the five senses that are Indian in origin and spirit, modern in presentation and universal and timeless in appeal.
On 16th, Shoot the Cameraman by As We Are (AWA) brings a fusion of contemporary dance and live camera work. Created by Baptiste Hilbert & Catarina Barbosa, this Luxembourg-based dance company brings out the intersection of social issues and the digital age. AWA’s unique approach combines choreographic art with technological innovation, making the dancers interact with the audience in new and exciting ways. With live camera work transmitting different perspectives of the same performance, you will get to experience the performance in a dynamic manner.
The final day, 28th will feature a mix of Odissi and Kathak-Flamenco. Sujata Mohapatra, a renowned Odissi exponent showcases her talent highlighting one of India’s oldest classical dance forms. Recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, she had 20 years of tutelage under Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Supported by Voltas as part of their CSR initiative, her performance will be a celebration of rhythm, expression and spirituality. The night concludes with Crossroads, Aditi Dance Collective's Kathak-Flamenco production. This experimental partnership brings together Aditi Bhagwat and Bettina Castaño presenting two expressive dance genres from India and Spain, drawing connections between Kathak and Flamenco, both of which originated in Rajasthan's nomadic gypsies.
