What Is It?

Under the gaze of the full moon, when the sands of the white rann {desert} glimmer at night, it’s breathtaking! And it’s not the sand of the rann that’s white, but the carpets of salt that cover parts of the desert. Now imagine that, and song and dance, coupled with stargazing – what lies in front of you is an experience you never want to forget.

Rann Utsav is a four-month-long desert festival that ends on March 4, 2018. As the official site states, it is a carnival of music, dance and folklore, offering an excellent opportunity to tourists to indulge in leisure, pleasure and merriment. A package for one night and two days starts at INR 5,500 for non-AC cottages and can go up to INR 8,100 for premium tents {cost is per person}. However, peak season i.e. December and January sees a hike in fares.

How Do I Get There?

There are flights that go from Mumbai to Bhuj and from there you can get an air-conditioned vehicle for five people that charges INR 9 per kilometer {the distance is 102 kilometres}.

What's Unique About It?

While exploring the Rann of Kutch during Rann Utsav, you have a chance of travelling by camel cart, where you can explore the grandeur of the sunset in the evenings.

The Rann Utsav is also a shopper’s paradise because of the variety of embroidered garments, hand paintings, jewellery items, wood carvings and wall paintings that are all around you. Ensure you carry an additional INR 5,000 with you if you plan on bringing something home.

Also, try and get the Khaarek garment. Khaarek is a geometric style where the artisans work out the structure of geometric patterns with an outline of black squares, then fills in the spaces with bands of satin stitching that are worked along warp and weft from the front.

While you’re there, take time out to explore Narayan Sarovar, a pilgrimage spot, as well as the Koteshwar Temple. If you like climbing stairs, then do make it a point to check out Kaladungar or The Black Hill, which is Kutch’s highest point, which is also famous for its 400 years old Temple named as “Dattatreya”. It is  located very close to the Indo-Pak Border and there is an Army Post at the top.

Anything Else?

If you have time, take a safari through the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary in the Little Rann of Kutch in northwest Gujarat. A safari through this region gives one a chance to come face to face with a wide variety of birds and other wildlife.

When: till March 4
