Remember we introduced you to the community of music lovers who organise secret gigs in the city, Sofar Sounds back in July? Its come a full circle as Sofar Sounds Bombay is completing a year this May. To celebrate the year it has been, they are organising two gigs this time around- on May 27 and May 28- and they promise to make it a weekend full of music, cosy spaces and lights.
Sofar Sounds Bombay Is Organising A Weekend Of Secret Gigs This May
What Is It?
Who Is It For?
For anyone who needs a break from the regular loud music, dazzling lights and drowning conversations. Sofar Sounds has a simple concept- sit down and listen. Since they organise their gigs in secret locations that are sometimes living rooms in an apartment or bizarre locations like an art gallery, the idea is to make it as intimate as possible.
They are all about warm fairy lights, meeting strangers, but also like-minded people, and of course, listen to the artist sans your cell phone recording the real moments.
Why Should I Go?
To support the independent music scene and your local artists, and of course, for the love of music. Sofar started off in Mumbai a year ago, and since then they have been organising gigs every month. However, May is special as they turn one. Arul Kacker, the city leader, tells us that for their anniversary, they wanted to make it special for the people who come to enjoy the gigs. And having back to back gigs was put in motion!
To apply for the gigs, you need to register by May 20, post which the team curates the guest list. If you’ve been selected, you will get an email or in Sofar terminology, “You’ve got mail”. Now now, if you don’t get a spot for either of the two gigs, don’t be disappointed- they will be organising more next month {it’s a monthly affair}.
The location is disclosed only a day prior to the gig, and the curated-artist line up is kept a secret as well. Get there, and be ready to be surprised!
Anything Else?
Sofar runs entirely on its community members who volunteer for it, and the artists do it out of their love for the community. If you do get selected, it’s pay what you like post the gig {no judgement there}. It’s also a BYOB scene.
So, we’re saying that you simply plonk yourself on the floor, enjoy the music and meet new people.
