Anniyam means 'unique' as in the concept of South Indian food in Mumbai. The focus here is to represent the coastal flavors merging with the basics of South Indian popular items.
A small but tastefully designed eatery located strategically, this place offers traditional South Indian vegetarian food from across the Southern States. However, one look at the menu and you know it goes beyond the usual Idli and Dosa. Of course, these dishes too, figure on the menu, but there are exciting variations.
What we were served: Chettinad Idli, Podi Idli, Pepper Roast Idli, Mysore Sada Dosa, Thayyir Saadham, Bisibele Bhaat, Paneer Gassi, and Appam Stew
Chettinad Idli: This is a fluffy and soft type of idli made of batter that is ground to extra-fine consistency. This idly variety works very well with Chettinad masala powder and gravies and also with chutney and sambhar.
Podi Idli – Idli makes for an amazing breakfast item, and Podi idli makes for an even more delicious and tangy and filling breakfast item. Freshly steamed idlies are tossed with a spice mix called podi and pure ghee and then served hot.
Mysore Sada Dosa: When you want to have a quick light meal but are too perky a mood for Sada Dosa, go for this as it is not too heavy on the tummy but still has a nice, semi-spicy flavor due to the Mysore chutney
Thayyir Saadham: Curd Rice is a delicious easy south Indian rice where cooked rice is mixed with curd and tempering is done to it.
Bisibele Bhaat: Bisi Bele Bhaat is a traditional dish from Karnataka made with rice, lentils, vegetables, and coconut. It is similar to a khichdi.
Paneer Gassi: Paneer Gassi is a delicious coconut and red chilly based curry from the coastal region of Mangalore. It can be served with appam, idli or parathas for a tasty meal
Appam Stew: A simple vegetable stew cooked with the goodness and flavor of coconut milk and served with delectable appams.
Apart from this, we already tried Vasanta Neer (our favourite), Naranga Neer, Jigar Thanda, and Unniappam!
In a nutshell, Anniyam is a Paradise for South-Indian Food Lovers!
