The Eclipse And The Blue Moon
A lunar eclipse will occur on Jan 31, where the Earth, sun and moon will be in perfect alignment with Earth in the middle, casting its umbral shadow on the moon. A Blue Moon happens when two full moons occur in the same calendar month and so the January 31 super moon will the second full moon of the month, a rare phenomenon that happens every two and a half years on an average.
The Super Moon
Apart from being a blue moon, the January 31 moon will also be a supermoon. That night, the moon will be closest to the Earth, appearing 14% bigger and 30% brighter than a normal moon. This is occurring on the same day as the blue moon, which is the 2nd full moon of the month as explained above.
The Blood Moon
The eclipse happening on 31st is a total lunar eclipse, which will cast a shadow of the Earth perfectly blocking the moon. NASA says that the moon will lose its brightness and take on an eerie, fainter-than-normal glow from the scant sunlight that makes its way through Earth’s atmosphere, which will give it a reddish colour because of the way atmosphere bends the light. These red moons are called blood moons.
How Can I See It?
The Super Blue Blood Moon will be visible from India between 6:21pm and 7:37pm. Hope you will be ready with your binoculars in a free space with clear sky. You can also attend this event to witness this spectacle through a telescope.
