What Makes It Awesome

Finding a nice place for drinks after work in BKC isn’t necessarily a Herculean task, but we find that it’s hard to get a place that’s casual and uppity, while still having stellar drinks that are innovative, strong, and yet polished and experimental. When The Burrow opened up, we decided to head here to sample their menu, and get a feel of what an evening here is like. Here’s what we thought!

On entering, you’ll find that the vibe is very Europe-inspired, think TimeOut Market in London, or the speakeasies of Berlin. The ambience is cozy, and it feels like a chill space where you can unwind with friends or colleagues. We visited in the evening, the lighting was pleasant, without being too dim, and the music was great, and supported being able to have conversations—which is always appreciated. There are tables for all kinds of groups, and even a separate area you can opt for if you’re throwing a party. It’s modern and relaxed.

We started off our meal with their 24 Hour Garlic Bread, which was surprisingly fresh, robust and the perfect combination of a crunchy crust and soft bread. Surprisingly moreish and utterly delicious, we consider this a non-negotiable starter for the table when you go here.

We then moved on to the House Nachos, served with generous amounts of Guacamole and Pico De Gallo. Order these without a second thought, because they will be polished right off!

Before heading to the mains, it was time to hydrate. We’d heard quite a bit about the drinks, and we decided to try them out with our review glasses on! The first one we tried was called the Short & Sweet— presented in a dainty glass, this one was potent, and the Black Currant Caviar added a fun textural touch to the drink. Next, we tried the Seville Sunset—a fun ombre drink that was a study in chemistry, with its unique red wine-cum-orange combo, which worked together so well. Lastly, we went for the G for Genius, which was the most experimental one we sampled. Featuring a unique almond fat-washed decoction, and a faint yet familiar taste of nostalgic glucose biscuits, we adored its rich mouthfeel and the tart flavour of apricots.

We then headed to the mains, starting with the Pumpkin Ravioli, which replaced the classic sage with curry leaves—a surprising swap that added an unexpectedly yummy coastal flavour. The ravioli itself was delicious, not too thick, and generously filled with a gently spiced pumpkin filling.

We then tried something we’ve never seen on a menu before—Jackfruit Steak! The plate featured a beautifully caramelised yet soft hunk of jackfruit, accessorised with a Leek and Charred Broccoli Puree, and a yummy Jerk sauce. We didn’t expect to love this as much as we did, and we hear that this vegetarian version has been favoured over its non-vegetarian counterpart.

To finish, we tried the yummy warm Skillet Cookie, and the Apple Pie. The portions for these were just right for two, and we loved the restraint shown on the sugar—neither of these were too sweet.

All in all, The Burrow is a lovely hideaway in BKC that’s a must visit when you’re hanging out in the area. Yes, it’s great for post-work drinks, but we’d wager that it’s just as fun for Sunday Brunch with the homies!
