Newly opened Underground Bookhouse in Bandra also doubles as a library. We love it for its intensive collection of independent publications, zines and artwork, all of which are personally collected by the founders and sold at affordable rates.

What It’s About

Tucked away behind Luisa Apartments on the Hill road, Underground Bookstore works out of a tiny garage. We enter the tiny space, and are greeted by Himanshu S and Aqui Thami, the people behind this creative space, who also run the Dharavi Art Room.

A Book-Lover’s Haven

The books were unusual, rare, and wonderfully weird. Hand-picked by the duo themselves, including some from their private collection, the focus is on independent publishers.
We browsed through their zines; Stop Making Sense, Drop Out, Aesthetically Yours, and so many more, while they happily attended to their excited customers. The book collection outside the store starts at INR 30 and they have opened up the space for library membership as well. Membership allows us to borrow one book and one magazine for 10 days.

Why We Love It

It’s heartening to see people with so much passion to run a public space like this. The two racks on the opposite walls donned quirky posters {hand drawn}, zines, artwork, and a corner with all the Harry Potter series {shout out to fellow Potterheads}.
The books that caught our eye: ABC’s of Anarchy by Brian Heagney, The Communist Party of the Soviet Union by Schaprio, to Deepak Chopra to even a beautiful Istanbul guide {by now, we’re ready to give them all our money}. We eventually picked up a neon-pink covered book, Love Poems by Purple Ronnie, and one of their zines, Stop Making Sense.

Price: Outside collection INR 30 per books, Zines INR 100 upwards

Membership: INR 1,500 deposit, plus 6 month membership INR 1,500
