I’m not a parent yet but for me, having kids is a lot about living our lives through them. Everything that wasn’t an option for me when I was a kid—like simply the gazillion cute dresses that are available today—I would want my child to have. Being a home enthusiast, I would love to put A LOT of thought into the decor and design for my kid’s room because 1) It’s too much fun and 2) why the heck not?

Gone are the days when kids rooms were simply about painting a rainbow and some fluffy clouds on the wall. Now, it's all about experimenting! You can experiment with a million colour schemes, pick out different themes and handpick fun pieces of decor.

The furniture is the easiest part—all you need is a bed and some storage. Rest, the hero can simply be the design and the walls. You can paint dragons and princesses, cartoons and robots, candies and chocolates—or whatever you please on the walls, use toys and plushies as decor, pick out the most outrageously pink quilts and duvets, because, who's judging?

The best part about designing a kids room is that you can let your imagination run wild and free... If you’re looking to design your child’s room (no matter what the age) and are in dire need of some ideas, here are some to help you along.

An Unconventional Colour Scheme

This ultra-modern and elegant kids room proves that not all kids' rooms should go bonkers with bright colours like pinks and blues and yellows. The dark grey textured wall is balanced and complemented by the light peach decor that is mirrored in almost every decor piece, including the cute floor lamp, the throw, the curtains, the blinds, that tiny toy telephone, the potted plant, and the rugs. There are not too many elements that crowd the room, it’s simple, subtle and does the job! Since there is a dark grey crib to match the wall, this particular design can work for a younger kid, around the ages of six months to two years, but you can always experiment and add a bigger bed if you please.

A Scandinavian Themed, Royal Blue Room

The best part about designing a kid’s room is that there’s a whole universe of possibilities that awaits you. You can take any element, any theme, any colour and make it the hero. The design featured here is simple yet looks nothing but simple! The plain royal blue walls have tiny white stars, and the furniture used is entirely wooden. There's a super cute swing, tiny chairs, bookshelf, and also a tiny bed. While the bed looks like it'll be good for a child of around 2 years of age, who can crawl around, we are not completely convinced that it has no support…the entire decor is of the same theme, subtle creamy beige, that matches the wooden furniture. Take the rug and the ceiling lamps for example.

That's perfectly balanced with the colours that are dotted around, in the form of cushions and plushes and dolls and other toys—blues that match the walls, orange that goes really well and so on. It's all in all a subtle, simple style that easily wins hearts.

A Li'l Dollop Of 'Adventure'

We love this design by architect Karen Smuland soo much! It's perfect to channel the bubbling energy of a five- to seven-year-old kid, plus the mountain climbing wall is certainly giving an added kick/doing a great job at being the highlight/making the room stand out. The room is bright and ventilated with multiple windows, has a solid wood bunk bed, grassy green carpet, a solid wood study table, pale blue walls—all in all giving it a very earthy feel. There's one thing for sure—your kid is never getting bored in this one.

One With A 'Whiz' Theme

If the previous room had an adventurous theme, this one certainly has the whiz kid feel. If the world of maths, science, words and numbers makes your kiddo wonderstruck, this room design will certainly inspire them! It's ideal for slightly older kids, around 7-12 years of age, and has a wonderful balance of colourful and monochrome (black and white) elements. The decor is well balanced between colourful elements like the abacus, blocks, and plushies and basketball. The glaring highlight is obviously the ugmonochrome and geometric rug, and the football bean bag. There are also cute cactus plants on top of the white cabinet, a white board and a grey-black geometric ceiling light that adds to the entire look!

Going Brown!

Another kids room inspiration moving away from bright colours and towards nudes, neutrals, and browns, this design is unlike any other! The touch of natural decor like the jute pouffe puts this inspiration right on trend, and the subtle and minimal design elements like the dark brown flower vase, the pen stand, the teddy bear, the wooden black board, the abstract wall clock and the wooden bedside tables bring a welcome contrast to the rooms’ light walls. We can also spot a wooden wall inside the room and an AC quilt/duvet with a linear design, and that’s about all the decor. This design is apt for kids of around 5-11 years of age.

Pro-Tip: Check out our tips for getting a wooden wall.

Make It Barbie But Subtle

This one is pink but not in a 'in your face' kind of way! It’s a very minimal and pastel sort of pink, best for older children of around 7-12 years of age. It has two cute twinsie beds with similar baby pink quilts and also a circular baby pink rug. The twin study tables indicate that the room is indeed meant for siblings. The study table comes attached to the window seat, and the plain white gives it a modern, contemporary look. The accessories right from the chair to the wall lamps and pen holders match this particular aesthetic. The starry ceiling light is a catch, and the room is dotted with other pastel-coloured elements and frames to add a pop of contrast to the majorly pink and white dual tone.

White Is Not Boring!

Colourful star stickers, colourful toy boxes and plushies, framed drawings by the child, this design inspiration is drenched in an innocent, childlike vibe that we love. The white wall features a brick texture that’s making it stand out, and the rest of the walls and the floor tiles and even the curtains are all plain white. But not at a single point does the room feel bland! The pink rug, the colourful potted plants and the cushions add just the right amount of colours. If you want, you can also experiment with the colour of the bedding, and add striking colours like valentino pink and that olive(ish) green, that’ll go well with the decor. This design is suitable for a kid between the ages of 4-9 years.
