My favourite aspect about fashion and its endless trends is that we keep borrowing from the past. From pleats, bell-bottom pants, and satin shirts to power suits. The past is something that keeps giving, and we're grateful for it.

The term vintage itself is a blanket category used to describe apparel that pretty much came from the 1920s to the 1990s with the pieces being stylishly representative of the era.

In addition to this, a huge fashion phenomenon that has taken precedence in the past couple of years is the use of vintage styles in everyday fashion — the 70s and their flared bottoms are back, so are the sequins of the 60s, and also the Mary Janes and kitten heels from the 20s along with the bows and the plaids from the 90s, all in the name of Girlcore. Now, while all of these are seen everyday and are pretty achievable, what makes a great vintage outfit are the ones that stood the test of time and not just became a "style" in that era. The outfits we look up to even today when we mention a decade.

If you're a vintage clothes lover, here are 10 of the most iconic vintage outfits from history that you can recreate while also wearing your wide-legged trousers and white shirts paired up with your Doc Martens

Probably one of the most iconic vintage outfits of all time, that is also responsible for heavily bringing back everything pleated — the white halter dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in the movie 'The Seven Year Itch' (1955). This dress, and this photograph in particular, has gone down in history and still lives in all of our heads rent-free even if we've watched the movie or not. If it's a bright sunny, windy day and your dress flies up you will call yourself Monroe and that's just how it is! Which is also what makes it all the more iconic, plus effortlessly timeless that it can be re-created anytime. The dress, the genius of William Travilla who did a great job at blending feminity, innocence and seduction all in one magnificent pleated dress.

Princess Diana's Revenge Dress

They say that the best revenge is living well, but for the Princess of Wales, it was living well, and dressing well. And the Christina Stambolian designed slinky off-shoulder black dress is testimony to that. The iconic dress came with a pleated bodice and a draped chiffon skirt and has popped back into the limelight because of 'The Crown'. What we also loved about it was the use of chiffon; the bodice was pleated and tight, and the chiffon 'tail' gave it a very flowy silhouette, which was quite unique.

Pro-tip: Love the revenge dress? Here are some alternatives.

Christian Dior's New Look

Post World War II, women's fashion was redefined since there were no restrictions on fabric anymore. This led to the groundbreaking and one of Dior's most recognisable vintage silhouettes, dubbed the 'New Look'. The 1947 collection was all about full skirts and jackets that emphasised a tightly cinched waist. The super glamorous fresh look became a fixation for women all over, especially housewives. And even though feminists protested against the conservative hemlines, nothing could take away the fact that now fashion was being enjoyed for what it was — minus any restrictions, happy and joyful in a war-free world. What we love about the New Look is how hyper-feminine it was, and with trends like Girlcore, corsets, and Coquette trending like never before, we can't help but take inspiration from the padded blazers and cinched waists again.

Audrey Hepburn's Little Black Dress

It doesn't matter if you've seen the movie or not, but the minute someone mentions Audrey Hepburn, we bet the first image that pops into your mind is her in a slinky black gown with pearls and an updo. The second the Givenchy gown was spotted in Breakfast At Tiffany's, it established the presence of the LBD for women across the globe while also leaning fully towards hyper-feminity and modernity. It was glamorous, chic, and soon became a staple which is religiously followed to date. Everyone owns at least one LBD, and that's that.

Jennifer Lopez's Jungle Print Dress

Whether it was a vacay look or an award show look, it has been etched in our memories forever/. Jennifer Lopez rocked the Versace jungle print gown, and there's no one who has come close since. The look also became her signature fashion style, which was risque and elegant all at once and is also the reason why we love it so much.

LBB-tip: Now while we couldn't find something as risque as the Versace gown, we did find this super elegant, pleated dress that is very high fashion means chic NYC style.

Jackie Kennedy’s Pink Suit

The former first lady's influence on fashion is something that is absolutely undeniable. To date, her perfectly poufed hair, her pillbox hats, scarves, and sunglasses are what make up for most of the 60s fashion inspiration, along with Jackie O's pink Chanel bouclé set that she wore on the fateful day of 22 November 1963. She has also been attributed to popularising monochrome outfits with all her coordinated suits. We've seen this trend of co-ords massively trickle down in the past couple of years, and it is safe to say that the trend is not going anywhere at all. In addition to the co-ord craze, the Old Money trend is also responsible for the look not dying down anytime soon.

Julia Roberts in 'Pretty Woman' had all of us in a chokehold, with the movie having gone down as one of the greatest love stories to be shown on film. Along with the space it made in all of us rom-com-loving folk's hearts, the iconic red gown worn by the actress also holds a special place in our hearts! What we love the most about this gown, other than it being super elegant, is that it makes for a lovely evening event outfit. Pair it with strappy heels, minimal jewellery, and you'll be sorted.

Cher's Naked Dress

In 1974 Cher wore the 'naked dress' that took the world by storm. There were no pasties, no shape-wear, just the 70s fashion icon — Cher and her striking body. Designed by Bob Mackie the dress fit the Met's theme to a T but also brought risk and elegance so perfectly together. Fast forward several decades now, sheer clothing and sheer fashion have come back with a bang, and of course, we cannot get enough of the trend. In our heads, Cher's iconic naked dress will always remain the pioneering inspiration.

Olivia Newton John's iconic all-black outfit in the closing scene of 'Grease' was nothing short of iconic. It exuded badassery, goth, rock-chick, and of course, style! The look is all 70s street style and definitely made a statement, especially a woman in all leather, all of which was very refreshing to see. Needless to say, leather (including faux leather) made a huge comeback and decided to stay, with all of us owning at least one piece of leather clothing.

Power Suits and the allure of the 80s is something that has never really faded. With Grace Jones on the cover of Nightclubbing, it was proven that no one could rock the cover and a power suit better than her. The iconic magazine cover painted by French artist, Jean Paul Goude also paved the way for androgynous fashion, which is also something we've seen being revived again and again in today's times. Grace Jones gender-bended before it was cool too, and we're thankful for her bringing androgynous to the mainstream.
