I am a pure desi at heart and if ever I have to choose between western wear and a saree, my hand invariably reaches for the six-yard drape. As an enthusiastic saree wearer, I am on the lookout for brands that lay emphasis on traditional techniques, designs and hand-based processes. The Weavers Studio in Ballygunge, Kolkata has a huge, meandering space with distinct segments that are allocated to the finest handcrafted sarees, scarves, suits, menswear and yardage.

Their website too has plenty to offer and in this period where travel is restricted and shopping from home is the norm, I sought out the online medium to place my order. A mustard tussar Bauhaus Geometric Hand Block Printed Saree and a woollen stole were too hard to resist and I waited excitedly for my parcel to arrive. Experiences at online shopping have not always been the best for many of us, so I was a bit apprehensive but my doubts were laid to rest when I received the parcel. The saree was exactly as I had seen it on their website. Stunning with beautiful, neat designs block printed on superlative quality tussar silk it exuded a sense of style with elegance. Even the packing was so wondrous that I stepped back in admiration and gave mental applause at the painstaking effort they took in making their customer happy. Bravo

The Weavers Studio ties the community of Indian weavers by carefully intertwining techniques and processes from different parts of the country. I find this rather appealing. You’ll find a lehriya saree with a patchwork pallu delicately embellished with stitch lines, a block printed saree with Kantha work, a handwoven white khadi saree with zari at the skirt edges and pallu or a sparkle added to Shibori with the use of mirror work. Each piece is unique, exquisite and embodies the timeless fusion of the past and present.

The kaleidoscope of colours at Weavers Studio is inspired by India’s rich textile tradition. There are the royal whites and ivory, stronger colours like madder, logwood and indigo and warmer tones such as mustard, orange, red and maroon. Whether one wants to add a rich Benarsi saree, a fine Dhakai Jamdani, the graceful Lucknowi Chikankari or the intricately woven Baluchari from Murshidabad to their collection, the store has a variety of sarees to offer from the country’s heritage treasure.

When Darshan Mekani Shah and Radhika Shah - the mother-daughter duo, founded Weavers Studio they were inspired by historical textiles, traditional Indian fabrics, seasons, ethnic tribes, across the border cultures and contemporary techniques. The store is a celebration of the elegant versatility and durability of our rich textiles and profound reverence for skilled craftsmanship and handiwork. Along with excellence in customer service, Weavers Studio has it all to draw in a bevy of loyal customers. After this pleasurable experience of mine, I know I’m one for sure.
