During the Quit India Movement in 1942, several leaders of the Indian freedom movement were kept under internment at the Aga Khan Palace in Pune. It included Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba, his secretary Mahadevbhai Desai, Sarojini Naidu, and a few others. They were interned from August 9, 1942, to May 6, 1944. Mahadevbhai and Kasturba Gandhi passed away while in captivity. The palace has their samadhis. A portion of Gandhi’s ashes are also kept there. They are enclosed inside a walled compound with marble flooring at Aga Khan Palace.
The room in which Mahatma Gandhi stayed is untouched and still has his pair of spectacles, writing desk, pens, and everything that he used during his internment. They have also kept things used by Sarojini Naidu and Kasturba Gandhi. In addition, Aga Khan Palace also houses a khadi shop and a small canteen that serves chai, coffee, sandwiches, and other snacks. The palace witnesses over a lakh visitors yearly.
