For the always-hungry, thalis are the best option. And when the thali is an authentic one, you’ll definitely go the extra mile to eat more! Check these nine places that serve the best thalis in town.

6 Ballygunge Place Thali

The Kasba outlet of 6 Ballygunge Place is known for their wide range of thalis – Fish Thali, Ilish Thali, Mutton/Chicken Thali and Chingrir Malai Thali. These are served with a complimentary curd drink, luchi, lemon essence rice, alu dom, and dal, alongwith a side of whatever thali you ordered such as two big pieces of prawn for the Chingrir Malai Thali, or a well-prepared ilish. Everything except luchi, the main side and drink is unlimited. These serve as really extensive meals that are bound to leave you extremely satisfied.

There’s another outlet in Behala that you can check out if Kasba is too far for you. The thalis start from INR 195 and can be had from 12pm to 3.30pm and 7pm to 10pm.

Blue Poppy

You better head here early – a favourite of all college goers and office people near Maidan, Blue Poppy is always jam-packed. Apart from their popular {and delicious} pork momos and shaaptas, they also have a Nepali thali in veg and non veg options. One of the components is gondruk, a preparation of fermented leafy vegetables very popular in Nepal. Another dish we found very interesting is the kinema, a soyabean dish fermented in lactobacillus. This is served with steamed rice and two sides of vegetables for the veg thali and a side of pork, chicken or fish for the non veg one. Blue Poppy is a great place for any meal, but these thalis {priced at INR 110 onwards} will make you want to visit the place more often. Thalis are available between 12pm to 4pm and 5pm to 9.30pm.

Broadway

This majestic old Kolkata pub has recently started serving amazing thalis. They have Chinese and Thai options – the former has fried rice, chowmein, chilly chicken, hot garlic vegetables and a side of kimchi. The Thai thali has steamed rice and Thai noodles served with chicken Thai yellow curry and a green Thai vegetable curry also served with kimchi. Pair this up with some of their draught beer, and you have the perfect office break. Prices start from INR 150.

This is also one of the few places in the city where you’ll see middle-aged women having a drink together, alone without anyone giving awkward glances.

Rao’s Udipi Home

Along with a fabulous South Indian veg menu, Udipi also serves a very extensive, cheap thali at INR 70. This comes with sambar, rasam, steamed rice and lemon rice or poha rice, and is served with a side of vegetables, salad, pickels, south Indian papad and sweet. We bet you can’t get a thali this good and this cheap anywhere else!

Saptapadi

Slightly on the expensive side, their Bangali thalis will make you drool! They have fish, veg, chicken, mutton, and special non-veg and a special fish thali. The special fish thali at INR 690 is definitely a winner. It comes with rice or polau, luchi, dal, papad, salad, dessert, chutney, alu bhaja and a side bhaja like beguni, which can vary depending on the day you visit. For the mains you have chingri malai curry, ilish and a bhetki paturi. With such an elaborate spread, this is one meal you should definitely not miss.

Dalma

Dalma is an Oriya food joint in Salt Lake, and the only food joint to serve such an extensive selection of Oriya food in the city. They have some really interesting thalis like the veg/non veg Pakhala Thali and the Dalma Special Veg Thali. Other options like mutton, chicken and fish thali are also available.

The Pakhala Thali is served with rice which is soaked overnight, tempered with fried onions, cucumber, mint leaves, mustard seeds and curd before serving. The accompaniments include cucumber and carrot salad, dates and tomato chutni, dhula saag {spinach} with mustard and ginger, thor alu etc. The other thalis include Oriya preparations of chicken, fish and mutton. Prices are from INR 100.
