Located in Raajkutir, Swabhumi, characterised by its antique charm, the East India Room is part of the old Bengal vibe of this boutique hotel. The dishes are mainly from the pre-Independence era and showcase a mix of Portuguese, English, Mughal and Dutch influences.
The East India Room not only serves Bengali dishes, but also has a range of classic items with a twist. The recipes are inspired from the zamindari days. Diners can also interact with the chefs and discuss what they feel like eating, instead of having just a menu to choose from. Few of their signature dishes include Tiffin Box Bhapa Chingri, which is one item you cannot go without ordering, the Dak Bungalow Mutton, a signature dish with tender pieces of mutton in a thick sauce and the legendary Prawn Cocktail (perfectly seasoned, served atop a frozen lady's hand, it is a treat, both visually and taste-wise).
Their portion sizes are very filling and the presentation is a beautiful bonus! They also have an array of refreshing summer coolers like Aam Pora Sherbet and Bel Sherbet. For desserts, you can go for the old favourite, the Baked Alaska. The dish is flambeéd on the table itself. With the french windows and arm chairs, the decor further adds to the colonial charm of an old Bengal before independence. The food is reasonably priced and is great for a lavish Bengali meal, coupled with a few continental classics.
