The spring of 2000 in Copenhagen gave birth to the novel concept of The Human Library. This one-of-a-kind movement lets you read humans {instead of books} from different walks of life and experience. At Human Library Pune, it’s all about changing perceptions!
Started by Navneet Mittal in June, 2017 as a part of the Global Harmony Trust, the Pune-chapter of Human Library has roped in inspiring ‘human books’ from various strata of the society. The concept is simple. You go to the library of people and indulge in to a heartfelt conversation with one of them. The people {or, the books} who are chosen to be a part of the collection, come from various aspects of life – some have battled a disease, social stigma or depression, some have overcome challenges to become a stronger person, some are changing the world in their own little but definite ways and some refused to abide by the mundane norms and wrote their own destiny. Every book is bold, unique and beautiful. But more than that, each of them has a story that will change the way you perceive life in general. You takeaway a slice of their lives and learn something impeccably great. And, that is exactly what a human library does to you.
At Pune, there are about 21 books. From a renowned city-based RJ to the story of a single mother who fought against all odds to become one of the rank holders at COEP to the tale of an oncologist who came out of the closet to a visually-impaired software developer who didn’t stop dreaming.
The Human Library Pune meets once every month. As a reader, you choose a book and get a three-hour one-on-one session with the person. A book can be read by not more than two people at a given point of time. The organisation does not charge for the events. Anyone can be a part of movement, there are no membership charges whatsoever. However, there will be a donation box at the event. And we strongly urge you to show your support in whatever way you can. Visit the Human Library, Pune with an open mind and don’t judge a book by its cover.
