Lately, we are witnessing a new restaurant opening in every nook and corner of the city. From high-end eateries to hole-in-the-wall joints, the options to eat at are endless. While we love every bit of the food Rennaisance happening in Pune, we are a little biased towards our favourite places that have served us for decades. From iconic Irani cafes to authentic South-Indian fare, these restaurants have a cult status and following.

George Restaurant

Serving delectable meals since 1936, George Restaurant at Camp is a legend in its own right. Originally started by an Englishman, the restaurant is famous for its Indo-Mughlai fare. We love their kheema pav, mutton biryani, butter chicken, and jujeh kebabs. The restaurant serves equally delicious Continental and Chinese food as well. Make sure you try the famous caramel custard here for dessert.

Although a relatively new spot, Nisarg at Erandwane is undoubtedly one of the best spots for seafood in the city. Serving authentic Malwani fare in a relaxed environment, Nisarg restaurant takes pride in serving the freshest seafood, from pomfret to prawns, crabs, mussels, and much more. A few must-try dishes here have to be the prawns koliwada, rawa-fried pomfret, surmai tikka, and crabs.

Durvankur Dining Hall

Durvankur Dining Hall at Sadashiv Peth has stood the test of time. For more than 20 years, the quick-service restaurant has pleased Punekars with its authentic Maharashtrian Thalis served in an unpretentious environment. Every day of the week, the three-storey restaurant opens for diners looking to fill up on wholesome meals. A standard thali at INR 400 will have three veggies, kadhi, dal rice, dal khichdi, chapati, bhakri, thalipeeth, dahi wada, papad, cucumber salad and two sweets. On Sundays, the thali has puri and chapati, masala rice, dhokla, bhaji, three veggies, dahi wada, papad, salad and two sweets.

Although it may not be as old as some of the other eateries on this list, Le Plaisir will definitely be credited as one of the first cafes in the city that brought authentic French cuisine to Pune. Started by Siddharth Mahadik, an engineer turned chef who studied at Le Corden Bleu, the cosy European bistro began in 2012 and gained a huge fan following soon after. Located at Prabhat Road, Le Plaisir exudes elegance and sophistication with its contemporary aesthetics that have a subtle French influence.

Bedekar Tea Stall

These days you'll find hundreds of spots in the city that serve misal pav, but nothing comes close to the assal Puneri misal served at Bedekar Tea Stall. What began as a modest roadside stall in the 1950s soon evolved into a beloved tea destination, thanks to the unwavering dedication and commitment to quality that the Bedekar family upheld for years. The stall's enduring popularity can be attributed to its signature dish, misal pav, which remains a closely guarded family secret recipe. According to the Bedekar family, the tea stall serves over 500 kg of misal every day and even more on weekends.

Sujata Mastani

Sharadrao Kondhalkar opened a tiny ice cream shop at Sadashiv Peth in 1967 and named it after his daughter Sujata. Initially, the small ice cream parlour served eggless ice cream in rose, pistachio, kesar, chocolate, and mango flavour. Over time, Sujata incorporated the popular mastanis on its menu, and there was no looking back. After its immense popularity, the name changed from Sujata to Sujata Mastani, and it is still run by the Kondhalkar family. Today, you'll find more than 30 flavours of mastani and many more indulging sweet treats.

Dorabjee & Sons Restaurant

Run by the fourth-generation Dorabjee Sorabjee Chindy family, Dorabjee & Sons Restaurant is one of the oldest Parsi restaurants in Camp. Maintaining the old-world charm through its bare minimum decor comprising Formica tables, plastic chairs and damp walls, the restaurant is one for the history books. Food-wise, nothing much has changed since 1878. We love the dum biryani, mutton kheema, mutton paya and chicken dhansak with brown rice.

Cafe Goodluck

When anyone is talking about the best Iranian breakfast in town, they're probably referring to the legendary Cafe Goodluck on FC Road. Established in 1935, the restaurant is known for bun omelette and special chai. However, for a more filling meal (lunch or dinner), one must try their tawa kheema with boneless chicken biryani and roomali roti. For desserts, order nothing but caramel custard. It is a delight in every bite.

Started by Praful and Cheeru Chandawarkar, Malaka Spice is perhaps one of the best Pan-Asian restaurants in the city. With outlets at Koregaon Park, Baner, and Viman Nagar, the restaurant has consistently delivered on vibe, ambience, and food. We recommend you try the pho chiru soup, a Vietnamese speciality made of star anise, basil, coriander and mutton. Meat lovers must try their Mandarin duck, made in exotic honey and orange sauce tossed with sliced chillies, litchi and pineapple.

Marz-O-Rin

Started in 1965 by Sheriar J. Sheriyarji, Marz-O-Rin is nestled in a 100-year-old heritage building with high wooden ceilings, arched multi-colour glassy windows and a winding stairway. When it comes to food, Marz-O-Rin is known for its simple yet scrumptious offerings like chutney sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, cutlets, rich plum cake, chocolate fudge, coffee, Shrewsbury biscuits and mango thick shakes. They also have many vegan options now.

Hotel Shreyas

Established in 1966, Hotel Shreyas serves comforting Maharashtrian thalis, starting at INR 270. The best thing about their food is that it stays true to the authentic home-cooked Maharashtrian meal. These thalis comprise one dry veg sabzi made of either Katri batata or gobi batata or bhindi masala, or a combination of everything; there is a gravy-based dish too, made of bharli wangi, methi patal, palak patal and tomato rasa. There will also be an usual option of either mattar, moong, matki or birdi. The thali will also have amti, sol kadi, two kinds of farsan, koshimbir and a spicy veg curry.

The First Brewhouse

Located inside The Corinthians at NIBM, The First Brewhouse is an extension of Doolally’s from Mumbai. Touted as one of the pioneers of craft beer breweries in Pune, this brewhouse is immensely popular for its house craft beers like apple cider and delicious oatmeal stout. We also love the crispy fries served with six variants of dips. Although it's a little in the outskirts, the drive is worth it for the long happy hours.

Revered for its pure vegetarian fare, Shabree is an iconic Maharashtrian restaurant at FC Road. People wait in line outside the restaurant daily to get a table. A few of our favourite things to order at Shabree include puran poli, pithala zunka, masala bhaat and tupacha varan. It is also known to serve breakfast items such as misal pav, thalipeeth and even upwas thalis on special fasting occasions.

The Place - Touche The Sizzler

One of the most legendary restaurants on MG Road, Pune (open since 1971), The Place is like the godfather of sizzler eateries in the city. From steak to seafood–and everything in-between (pork, poultry, veg, paneer)—they serve around 40 varieties of sizzlers on their menu. One thing you won’t find at other sizzler eateries is their Goan-specialty sizzlers: cafreal and balchao with the protein of your choice. Almost all the sizzlers are served with rice, loaded with thick-cut potato chips and sauteed veggies. The place gets crowded, so you may have to wait for a table, but totally worth it!

Ask any Punekar for a good breakfast spot, and they'll direct you to Vohuman Cafe. Known for serving hearty brekkies in an unfussy ambience, Vohuman Cafe was established by Hormuz Irani in 1978. Over the years, the cafe has cemented its place in Pune's culinary heritage. From egg cheese omelettes to bun maska, cream rolls, Irani chai, and more, everything on the menu is a delight.

Blue Nile

Established in the early 1970s, Blue Nile rose to fame for its mouthwatering biryanis and chelo kebabs. Started by Akbar Mashallah, who moved to Pune from Iran in the 1930s, Blue Nile gained a massive fan following for its authentic food, served in a simple ambience. For years, eating at Blue Nile was a tradition that every visitor followed. While the restaurant may have lost its early charm, the food is still one of its highlights. From mutton biryanis to Mughlai parathas, kebabs, and more–Blue Nile will always be a big part of Pune's culinary scene.

A cult favourite, Vaishali at FC Road is an experience and an emotion for true blue Punekars. Busy at all hours of the day, their authentic South Indian fare is worth the wait (and the trip). Start with the classics: vada sambar, Mysore masala dosa, and an onion cheese tomato uttapam (with butter, obviously) and work your way through the menu from there. Vaishali also serves snacks like sandwiches, toasts, bhelpuri, hot/cold beverages, and fruit salad.

Another gem at FC Road and a popular hangout spot for the college crowd in the neighbourhood, Roopali is a popular breakfast spot in the city. A humble coffee house and a South Indian eatery, no one can resist the fresh aroma of crisp dosas, vadas, sambhar and filter coffee. There is indoor and outdoor seating, and people come down for its affordable and delicious food. Sunday mornings are the busiest it can get.

Wadeshwar has a long-standing reputation in Pune and has a cult following for its delicious South Indian fare. Will you believe us if we tell you that they serve delicious buttery pav bhaji and chole bhature with lassi? Try it out and thank us later. The ambience is pleasant, service is quick, and prices are affordable. They have multiple outlets across Pune, but the most well-known ones are on FC Road and Law College Square near NFAI.
