Think of Kothrud and the only things that pop up are MIT, by-lanes bustling with students and of course, Cafe Durga. On our recent hunt for mouthwatering street grub, we landed at this massive food strip right in front of the college. And, boy oh boy, were we surprised or what? Read more to find out!
This Lane Full Of Eateries Is Every Foodie's Dream Come True
What Is It?
Kosha Mangsho & Luchi From 5th Apple Cafe
Amidst the clutter of small kiosks and crowded eateries near MIT, stand a distinctive duplex cafe painted in bright yellow and green. 5th Apple is a quirky little food joint with Minion tables, rope pendant lights, Sherlock posters and cute hourglass bar stools.
One of the bestselling dish out here is the kosha mangsho {spicy chicken gravy} with a luchi plate for INR 150, perfect for a belly-filling luncheon post lectures. Don’t forget to wash down your meal with either a glass of kokum sherbet or chilled ice tea, served in wacky skull jars.
Cold Coffee From Durga
If you’re in Kothrud, you cannot not have the legendary cold coffee by Cafe Durga. Priced at INR 25, this delicious mochaccino is made of low-fat milk, cocoa powder, coffee and chocolate sauce. Served with a crunchy wafer stick, try this summer drink next time you’re in the hood.
Chicken Shawarma From Zaytoon
After sipping on cold coffee, we stopped at our next destination to try authentic Lebanese food. While there are tons of shawarma joints on this strip, we recommend you head to Zaytook for a melt-in-the-mouth shawarma plate, made of well-marinated chicken chunks, hummus, homemade mayonnaise and pickled vegetables.
Masala Pav & Coffee With Brownie From Tuck Shop
The cheese masala pav at Tuck Shop is one of the big hitters amongst students at MIT. Priced at INR 40, this dish is a delectable mix of dabeli, pav bhaji and vada pav. The filling is made of spicy potato gravy, garnished with coriander and sev, and later smothered in cheese gratings and spoonful of butter. Order a glass of coffee with brownie along with this, and you’re well stuffed for the next couple of hours.
Maggi Pizza From Pick-A-Deli
Run by Piyush Wadhwa, Pick-A-Deli is a relatively new joint on the strip. While they offer a plethora of options in Chinese, Italian and Indian cuisines, nothing can beat their Maggi pizza for INR 90. We hear the pizza base is made of noodles, which is then religiously topped with mozzarella, cheddar, veggies, shredded chicken {for non-vegetarians}, jalapeno and garlic chilli dip. Sounds like a treat?
Kheema Pav From Mirchilly
We decided to conclude our food crawl with something that almost became a pocket-friendly dinner of kheema pav at this wonderful cafe known as Mirchilly, located further down the lane. Spicy, tangy and outright awesome, the meal cost us about INR 120. When was the last time you had a meal under INR 150?
