Ten-Second Takeaway

One more excuse to binge this week – Navroze or the Parsi new year is on August 17. Kolkata is kind of bereft as far as Parsi food is concerned, but we found a few places where you can have your fill of dhansaks and lagan nu custards.

Mancherji's

Supriya Mancherji and her husband Manchi started this small joint serving Parsi food almost a decade back. Situated near New Market at 14 Kyd Street, it’s the dhansak and the akoori that are most popular here. Earlier you’d get only Parsi cuisine here, but as the numbers of the community dropped, Mancherji’s has added Bengali dishes to draw in crowds.

They take party orders if they are above a certain number. The couple source Parsi masalas all the way from Mumbai and Pune as they can’t find any in Kolkata.

You must try the Chicken Dhansak which comes for INR 100, it’s quite meaty and the curry is made with four types of lentils {chana dal, red and brown masoor and arhar dal}.

They start and wrap up early – from 10 am to 8 pm.

Meher Caterers

Meher Caterers is located at the Parsi Dharamsala on Bow Street and is run by Meher and Dara Hansotia. The couple, who came here from Ahmedabad, serve mouth-watering Parsi fare {but you have to order in advance}. What comes highly recommended is the Prawn Patio {INR 150} and the Parsi Stew {INR 75} and the Papeta Ma Gosh {INR 150}. A  tray of the legendary Lagan Nu Custard comes for INR 400.

Nahoum And Sons

This fabled bakery located inside New Market is known for their vintage-style preparations of tarts, cakes and pastries that can be on the cover of any Betty Crocker cookbook!  But one thing that is really unique here is the cheese sambusak {or cheese samosa} – they use Parsi cheese for the filling.
