Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park: Everything You Need To Know Before Visiting

Whether it's the smooth moves of reptiles or the roar of lions, zoological parks provide an adventurous experience. It is a fun activity regardless of whether you're a kid or an adult. So, if you plan a trip in the wilderness of voices and views, you should visit Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Pune.

The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, which is managed by the Pune Municipal Corporation, is a 130-acre project in Katraj. The original zoo was located at the foothills of Parvati Darshan and then in 1999, it was moved to its current location. The new location has enabled the authorities to accommodate more animals. Along with being a recreational centre for locals, the zoo is also a conservation and wildlife research centre. 

The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Pune, is home to around 66 species of animals and reptiles. The zoo is famed for its various snakes which include Indian rock python, cobra, and viper snakes, among others. You will also find the royal Bengal tiger, Asiatic elephants, sloth bears, and ungulates. Along with them, there are Asiatic lions, leopards, jungle cats, rusty spotted cats, giant squirrels, mouse deer, foxes, wild dogs, hyenas, and lion-tailed macaques among other animals. The zoo also has various birds like peacocks, vultures, eagles, parakeets, and other exotic birds.

A major chunk of the animals in the various enclosures have their natural habitat in the Western Ghats. Apart from animals and reptiles, the zoo has a collection of snake skins and turtle shells. There's an in-house veterinary hospital equipped with advanced medical systems. Another major attraction of the zoo is Katraj Lake, which allows boating.

The zoo is located in Katraj, on the Pune-Satara Highway, about 7 km from Pune. It is well-connected by roads and easily accessible from all parts of the city. You can take the MSRTC bus to the Katraj bus stop. You can also book an auto or cab via multiple service providers like Ola, Uber, and Rapido.

A day at the zoo is a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends while getting to know animals. However, keep in mind that you're a guest at their home. Don’t make loud noises or throw things at animals. Also, wear comfortable shoes and clothing. The use of plastic is banned here, so carry your items in cloth or paper bags. Plus, there's an extra charge for cameras. You have to pay INR 50 for photography and INR 200 for videography.
