Dakshinapan is my go-to spot for any kind of fabric discovery. There are a number of places one can visit in order to avail a variety of different fabrics at reasonable prices. Dakshinapan is one of the well-known markets for fabric and crafts, so we discovered this place through word-of-mouth. Every fabric provides a different feel and authenticity, you have to visit all the stores in order to decide what suits your needs the best. Avoid late afternoons, because you might get caught in horrific traffic. And try out Dolly’s Tea for their variety of tea options.

I love Khadi Bhawan’s wide variety of fabrics. It’s a one-stop shop for all fabrics in Kolkata. I discovered it when I was on the look out to work combinations with gaamchhas. I recommend going during the afternoon as it allows for ease of communication with the staff. They’re closed on Sundays. Sienna Store and Cafe is just down the road with an amazing menu of sorts. And for fueling up, Gariahat has an abundance of street food around – puchkas, jhal muri and papri chaat.

The sarees at Byloom are extremely comfortable, made with traditional fabric. Their collection of clothes has a wonderful look and feel. I heard a lot about Byloom from others, and curiosity initially drove me to visit their store. One must allow for ample time to be able to explore everything. Their collection is fabulous. They house a café too and Mrs. Magpie down the road from there is famous for its cupcakes!

Geeta’s Circle is a beautiful boutique, with a combination of wonderful designs, from modern to traditional. They incorporate diversity in their collection. I was finding ideas for work, which drove me to their store. Avoid weekends  - they are shut on Sunday. And, if you’re hungry you can try Pepper Chino, which is right next door, or Jai Hind Dhaba, for their amazing reshmi kebab rolls!

The variety in the collection at Heritage Fabrics is amazing. They have a wonderful mixture of colours and textures, that are paired very well. I discovered this place from articles I scrolled through, when I was searching for inspiration and new designs. Always check if the stores are open over the weekend. While I am shopping there. I always try out Annapurna nearby for the dhoklas and khandvis.
