Suta, the Mumbai-based fashion and lifestyle brand, is easily one of our favourite brands when it comes to traditional Indian wear. So you can imagine our excitement levels when we heard that they’ve opened a store in the city (considering we were heartbroken when the first one on Sarat Banerjee Road shut down last year). Obviously, we decided to check it out!
This one is located in the Spencer’s building located in Rash Behari Avenue and is a super vibrant and colourful store comprising ethnic wear and a limited range of accessories for women (well, mostly!). The name ‘Suta’ means ‘thread’ in English and is perfectly in sync with their aim to celebrate traditional and ancient weaving methods but in a stylish and creative way.
The collection at this store is mostly dominated by sarees and blouses along with a limited range of dresses, kurtis, and sets for women. The sarees are available in all kinds of fabrics - silk, mulmul, cotton, linen, and more. You name it and they have it. You can buy hand-painted, jamdani, ikkat, kalamkari, block-printed, handloom, ruffled, batik, and embroidered sarees from their collection.
Suta’s collection of blouses is easily one of the most elaborate and extensive ones we’ve seen in a long time. Sleeveless, frills, halter necks, off-shoulder—they’ve got all kinds and in such beautiful colours! They definitely look striking and complement the conventional, traditional nine yards. Whether you want something for daily wear or occasions, get-togethers or weddings, you will definitely find what you’re looking for at this store.
They’ve got a small collection of menswear (think kurtas and shirts) and kids wear (frocks, tops, shirts, and dresses) too. We also spotted some beautiful earrings as well as waist belts and neckpieces made of glass and cotton.
Prices for sarees start at around INR 2,040 and blouses at INR 1,200.
