SketchWalk 1.0, an Urban Sketching Workshop, is an initiative of Gallery Gitanjali, intended to incite an interest in fledgling art and travel enthusiasts to take up Visual Journaling as a means of capturing the quaint charm and cultural uniqueness of heritage locations around Goa and in their travels in general. This first edition of Sketchwalk will have Artist Alice Masprone teach participants the essential skills of urban sketching such as free hand training; perspective study and fast drawing. Urban Sketching is the art of sketching on the go; the act of drawing while on location, in places that you travel to or currently live in. It not only encourages you to explore, but to document the world around you, and develop an eye for aesthetics. For nomads amongst us who have the incurable affliction of wanderlust, urban sketching is an invaluable skill of documenting travels or adding to your writing when words fail to capture what you wish to express. In addition, you don’t need much to carry out a sketch. A sketchbook and a pencil are sufficient for the minimalist, and as confidence builds, one may opt for pens, charcoal, art markers or crayons. Free hand training is necessary to enable the hand to move smoothly, in order to become sure and incisive in the drawing gesture using different tools (pencil, pen, pastel, brush) to help one find one’s individual trait. Basic perspective study will inculcate the ability to give depth to an image by exercising different points of view and the rules of perspective, resulting in three-dimensional drawings.Fast drawing techniques will train participants how to draw faster, concentrating on synthesizing what we see in a few glimpses and on becoming able to reproduce it without hesitation. Alice Masprone has done her Bachelor’s degree on Visual Art and Art History at the Academy of Fine Art of Turin, Italy and has taught painting and drawing both in schools (Lorenzo il Magnifico, Italy) and privately for many years. She will take us through the old world charms of the Latin Quarter, Fontainhas, where participants will be taught to observe, compose and sketch out interesting scenes. Materials required for the workshop include a Sketch book (A5/A4/A3) or drawing paper and a board, a soft pencil (3B to 6B), a ball pen (any colour) or any other drawing tool that you are comfortable with. The workshop will be held on the 9th and 10th of December from 3:30PM to 6PM. Participation is priced at Rs. 1,200. Participants are requested to call +919209262863 or +919823572035 to register.
