Babazin’s Shack on the banks of Mandovi river is our favourite hidden gem in Goa. A spectacular sunset, delicious food and affordable drinks makes this one a hit. Plus, it helps that it's not on one of North Goa's crowded beaches but in the quiet Reis Magos area that's not yet on the tourist radar.

What Makes It Awesome

Babazin’s has a simple one-page-menu that’s big on seafood. Based on availability, try their rava fry versions of chonak (river Snapper), mussels and lepo. They have every type of conceivable masala including a homestyle balchao or vindaloo, so take this as a chance to fall in love with Goan cuisine all over again. Prawn Balchao and Chicken Cafreal, anyone?

For the mains, definitely call for their prawn curry – it’s one of the best in Goa. The Shark Ambotik and Chicken Xacuti are equally loved by the regulars. We've got to admit that Babazin's isn't a party for the vegetarians but there's potato cutlet, fries, garlic poi and the likes to nibble on. Or, you can try the veg xacuti or the Samarachi Kodi; a tangy Goan curry made with mangoes.

If you’re in a big group and looking for authentic Goan food, give Babazin's a shot; we love that they also organise barbecue nights for private groups. Just inform the owner about the date, time and number of people and you’re good to go.

Pro-Tip

We're glad they're open through the monsoons but if we were you, we'd go here for lunch... The views are much better and the drive down the Reis Magos Fort is quite scenic.

I'm a Bombay girl with a Goan heart. I love words as much as I love travel and food. So I keep trying to mix the three up and see where it leads. Never judge, never generalize, and animals before everything else are the only three rules of my life. No I'm not Buddha. Yes, I collect sunglasses.
