Champaca, based in Bangalore, is a women-led bookstore, library, and cafe that is all about being and creating a community of readers who are diverse, fun, and creative. They're known to carefully choose and curate the books that they shelf because "a good bookshelf should hold a world of voices and stories, from across time, place and experience." They have everything from fiction, non-fiction, reflections across genres on gender, caste, and history as well as social sciences, translations, science fiction, and graphic novels. One of the most defining features of Champaca, other than also having a children's library, is that you can buy books online too, which is perfect for folks who don't live in Bangalore.
However the most exciting bit is that the much loved bookstore has now opened shop in Goa's Anjuna. Nestled in the quaint greenery of North Goa in the gardens of Mahé in a classic red-tiled roofed Goan home, Champaca is ready to open its doors on the 5th of November, 2022.
So if you're in Goa, then you know where to head to on the 5th at 6 pm where spoken word poet Rochelle D’silva and musician Zane Rodrigues are set to craft an evening filled with music and poetry, along with author Heta Pandit, who will be reading from her book of folk songs Grinding Stories Retold. And then later, when you need to buy more books than you can read!
