Azure Restaurant at Kandima Maldives is exploding with new flavours, bringing in a new wave with a change of palette, luxurious settings and delicious gluten, lactose and alcohol free food. This chic beach house offers casual dining by day and elegant signature dining on the beach by night. The newest entrant with such a concept, that will enamour you with their chic choice of interiors and exterior seating and a splendid selection of food across the island. Experimentation is something that we are truly witnessing in the food scenario and this place, at Kandima Maldives, is definitely one to look out for.
Azure, is an upscale, modern yet surprisingly well priced restaurant that speaks volumes about the progressive gluten and alcohol free food scenario along with vegan options in Maldives. This place exudes a vibrant, vivacious charm, as it is located by the beach. It has a gigantic open space that is mixed with minimalistic colours and sandy uneven flooring outdoors that keep the space interesting and unique. The seating is distributed depending on the number of people you are dining with, also catering to larger groups. The ambience is something we really crave for in the city chaos and the open seating, non- air conditioned, contradicting the conventional dining set up, make for an irregularly interesting viewing.
It offers a mix of Mediterranean dishes, fish, tapas, steaks, oven-baked pizzas and delicious wines. We requested a table facing the beach and started our meal. The first appetizer that we really wanted to sample was baby spinach and walnut salad with cherry tomatoes, Roasted beetroot carpaccio and compressed melon. They also served gluten free focaccia with salsa. The Compressed Melons were colourful- yellow, red and green succulent and bursting with flavours that came from a fine mixture of the sauce. The Roasted Beetroot Carpaccio came with a red thin rectangle thin beetroot layer and creates a sense of curiosity as one bites into it along with pickled mushroom, green apple and celery salad and walnut. The menu offers a wide array of dishes for the main course and picking from the seemingly sumptuous variety can be quite a task. We ordered the Grilled Local Reef Lobster which is equally delectable, but could be one that gave the lobster a bit more attention. Every dish on the menu is made with the finest quality ingredients and served in the traditional manner with a contemporary take on a few select dishes to cater to the varying taste buds. The slow roast Duck Breast comes with a crispy covering that adds a crunch as you bite into the softer inner meat which is full of robust flavours long with Chartreuse, Butternut, pineapple and passion fruit chutney. We zeroed down on some vegetarian options. We tried the Gluten free Pasta Arrabiata which contained fresh tomato concasse, roasted garlic and chilli flakes. There was also a Gluten free pizza topped with cherry tomatoes, eggplant caviar, avocado and rocket leaves. The whole experience comes to an end once the main course is done, but not quite! No matter how full you are, there is always room for dessert, right? And especially when the desserts look this appetising, there is absolutely no resisting a sweet treat after overloading oneself with yummy savoury items.
For dessert, we went for their signature Dark chocolate flourless cake which comes in a vibrant black colour with passionfruit compote complimenting the vibe of the place. A hazelnut gelato on the top tempts you to dig your spoon into the cake, scoop up some ice cream in your spoon and take a wholesome bite. And we guarantee, this dessert does not disappoint. A soft gooey middle layer and a crunch at the bottom and the top is what this dreamful cake was like.
It was quite a soiree as we finished platefuls of food that would otherwise seem impossible to finish amongst two people. And yet, when the quality of food is supreme, the presentation and service thoughtful, warm and welcoming, this can seem like an easy task. I would definitely recommend Azure at Kandima to anyone who desires an exquisite Mediterranen cuisine. The style of dining is something that can be unique, exciting and possibly new for people in the city who have been used to a conventional dining routine and a solid flow of 3 to 5 courses in progression.
