While Goa is ever known for its susegad way of living, festivals here make you see how Goans know not just to relax and chill but to celebrate life with great enthusiasm. The onset of monsoon season in Goa is marked by an extravagant festival called São João (pronounced: San Jao) on 24th June. Like last year, we are excited about being out and about on the roads to witness and partake in this celebration of sheer joy and indulging in the true Goan spirit all around.
Welcome The Monsoons By Participating In The Colorful Sao Joao Festival of Goa!
Why is it celebrated?
A 150-year-old festival, this event honours the birth of St John the Baptist, who, according to Christian tradition leapt with joy in his mother Elizabeth’s womb when she was told of the birth of Jesus Christ. You will see people merrily jumping into village wells and this custom of jumping and dipping is in imitation of John’s reaction of ecstasy.
How is it celebrated & what to eat?
You will see Goans dressed up in vibrant colors wearing floral shirts & dresses. They will be seen walking around in groups of 4 or more on the road. Smiling, laughing, dancing and merrily singing, “Viva São João”! Viva São João is a common celebratory woot you'll hear often this day. Another beautiful tradition is the Kopels donned by every person celebrating! It's a handmade crown made of fresh flowers, leaves and even fruits, also called “Kopel” in Konkani.
Now one would wonder where are all the Goans headed to in the mighty rains. Just like St John the Baptist, who joyfully leapt in his mother’s womb on learning about the arrival of his cousin Jesus — Goans go to the wells, streams and ponds and take leaps in these water bodies singing “Viva São João”. It’s also a mark of rebirth for them symbolising a refreshing start to their lives.
Next up to watch out for are the decorative boats floating in the rivers at the boat festival. A sight not to miss where you get to see boat races!
We know you are pondering about the food even though your tummies must be full of excitement about the festival already! Get your hands on Alle belle, a popular Goan pancake stuffed with a moist coconut and palm jaggery filling. Second, on the list is Waje, it’s a sweet and mildly spicy crunchy snack, best enjoyed with a hot cup of tea!
Where does the festival happen?
It’s celebrated all over Goa but the main festivities are held in the Siolim village right across St. Anthony Church where the Anjuna River flows. This marks the main spot to witness the boat parade along with popular local bands performing at the venue. Each boat has a unique design & theme. You get to admire the lush green scenery along with all the fun and frolic soaked in colours & rain.
Psst! Don’t hesitate to get drenched in the rain. That’s the only way to truly become a Goan, even if for a day. Take special caution in jumping in the water bodies if you don’t know how to swim. Look around for a life jacket, but do take that dip & get a chance to be reborn.
LBB Tip: Mark the date, 24th June, get your bikes fully tanked, buy yourself a raincoat, and a pair of Crocs with good grip & you are all set to join in the festivity! None of this concerns any money, but if you feel like contributing or making a donation, feel free to buy festive stuff from local vendors on the street that day.
Timing: The festival starts as soon as you wake up but if you are planning to take part in the festivity at Siolim village, be there at 3 PM.
