Take a break from mountains and beaches. Drop by Shyamnagar, a quaint locality on the eastern banks of the Ganges in the North 24 Parganas of Bengal, and soak in its rich cultural lineage.
A 50 minute-ride from Sealdah, one of the must-visit places in Shyamnagar is Mulajor Kalibari, which was set up by the relatives of Rabindranath Tagore. Visit the place to also enjoy the serenity of Hooghly river flowing by the temple. It is said that the temple was constructed around 200 years ago before Dakhineswar Kali Temple was set up by Rani Rasmoni Devi.
Other than the Mulajore Kalibari, there are three other notable Kali temples in Shyamnagar - Chowrangi Kalibari, Sidhheswari Kalibari and Rakshakali temple. There is also one Buddhist monastery situated by the railway line.
One of the best time to visit the place is during the month of December when a Poush Mela is held here. The Shyamnagar Book Fair is also organised every year at the time of Poush Mela at Kalibari area. If you're a foodie, then this place should be on your must-go list. Grab a mouthful of samosas at Nirapada Ghosh's confectionery in Nutangram. If you are lucky enough, you might also discover soyabean pieces inside the samosa. Other famous mouthwatering dishes include fuchka of Kalibari, dhakai porota, mutton curry, red chilli powder painted boiled eggs in the paratha shops just beside platform No. 1 at Shyamnagar station.
