Still not figured out what to get as a gift for someone special yet? Head to Aranya in Dakhsinapan — bags, coasters, notepads, quirky cups; they have something for everyone.
Their bags incorporate cotton and small details in leather. The prints range from pretty flowers with kantha stitch to smart indigo-printed ones from INR 1,000+. We loved the quirky, handprinted yellow bag with an owl (exhorting all to catch rats!) for INR 580. Their range of handbound, bespoke notebooks with interesting covers using fabric, art and images of the city can be a great gift for people who like to put pen to paper.
If you are looking for a truly standout gift, we suggest you pick up something from their collection of hand-painted enamelware plates and mugs. They're made with a base of metal and covered with a glass-like material called porcelain enamel. Aranya takes these to the next level with the art they incorporate. We loved the plate with a handpainted fish for INR 600.
Love Kolkata? Wear your love on your cups and coasters. From Victoria Memorial and the Howrah Bridge to Coffee House and rickshaws – you will find it difficult to choose from their range of images of the city (INR 300 onwards). You will fall in love with their range of showpieces in colourful, handpainted wood – rickshaws and autos. These are also available as fridge magnets (INR 80 onwards).
Their stock of whimsical, patterned lampshades are hand block dyed with floral and quirky animal patterns (think frog-print shades!). The light toppers are a surefire way to add panache to your space. They sell floor lamps as well as individual lampshades that can be used as a ceiling light or a table lamp (INR 600 onwards).
