What Makes It Awesome

Batasia Loop is one of the best places to get panoramic views of Darjeeling and the majestic snow-covered peaks of Kanchenjunga and the Eastern Himalayas. All you have to do is get on a toy train from Ghoom, that’ll pass by this loop, hooting its whistle all along. The train passes through a tunnel and stops here for a few minutes allowing you to rest and soak in the unmatched beauty of the hill station from a beautiful flower garden. We’d suggest you take a walk through the numerous pathways inside the garden.

Batasia Loop, considered an engineering marvel, was created by the British to work their way through a 140ft drastic fall. This loop helps trains to easily ascend and descend the slope without you even realising it. It completes the loop through a huge circular area and then wraps itself to cross its own track through a hilltop tunnel. Watch the train tear through the white clouds to make its way to the greenery around.

Take a walk around the track and complete the loop yourself. Visit the Eco Garden to learn about organic farming and plantations in Darjeeling and also for a glimpse of rhododendrons, silver firs, tea plants and rare plant species like gingko biloba. History buffs! Visit the War Memorial to pay homage to the Gorkha soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the several wars that took place after India’s independence. See the mountains through a telescope or get yourself photographed in traditional attire.

Visit the nearby market that’s got several restaurants and shops that sell awesome merch and souvenirs. Hungry? Grab a snack at the street stalls.
