We hear the best things in life are free, but considering today’s economic situation, we’re taking the liberty of saying the best things in life are under 200 rupees. This is the guide to my favourite cheap eats in Theatre Road, something for the food-lovers on a budget to rejoice about.

Sher-e-Punjab

Who doesn’t like Kolkata-style rolls? And when talking about them, you just can’t afford to miss the fish roll from the oldest joint of Sher-e-Punjab situated right on the edge of the lane from where Theatre Road starts. Stuffed with chunks of fish kebab and veggies wrapped inside a delicious paratha, and for INR 50, this one hits all the right spots.

Eggilicious

Do you love eggs so much that you wouldn’t mind having different varieties of it for both breakfast and lunch? Then head to this new joint dedicated to eggs. This 15-seater has a menu full of egg-based of which the Egg Cheese Maggi (INR 100) and the Eggstatic Burger with a mushroom base and topped with cheese and lettuce (INR 115) are the must tries. They also have chicken options.

Shah’s Kitchen

Right beside Eggilicious, this is solely for the hardcore vegetarians out there. Try the besan gatta curry and rajma. They have also got Bengali dishes like shukto. We recommend not having a seated meal here as the place is too congested. Get it packed or, if your office is within 1km, just get it delivered to your desk directly (INR 60 onwards).

Anna Ras

This one is for all you crazy chaat lovers. Rush to this little shop to binge on mouthwatering chaats like the dhokla and samosa one. You can also buy something from their range of fried goodies to later snack on. And you must try their vada pao.

Shibuji

We know how the scorching heat can sometimes take away our appetite. That’s why you should go to Shibuji to grab a glass of their famous soda shikanji or masala Thums Up to refresh yourself (INR 50). Give the kala khatta a miss here – it tastes liked cough syrup. With your tall glass of refreshment, you can order sandwiches for just INR 50 onwards.

Shri Shyam Kitchen

Think a tight budget can’t fetch you much variety? Well, not here. Bang opposite Khosla Electronics is this small eatery serving delicious Rajasthani food. Have some of their daal bati churtma (INR 100) along with some chilled rummy soda (INR 60).

Arun Tea Stall

Of course, you know about this one. If you’re not looking for anything heavy or, just want to have some hing kachori and samosa or jalebi with their famous kesar chai, this is the place. Perfect for mid day cravings. (INR 15 onwards).

BK Chilla

Heard of chilla, the amazing pancakes made of besan or moong dal? Apart from home kitchens, getting it outside is rare and this man in front of BK Market does it just right. A plate of chilla for INR 30 is served with two types of chutney, chilli and mint. It’s light, a bit spicy and perfect for on-the-go meals.
