What Makes It Awesome

Ladies! Looking for sustainable fashion ideas? Hit up Kolkata-based brand Onushshar.

Founded by fashion designer Zona Bera, Onushshar is a diacritic in Bengali script, written as a circle above a slanted line. The brand creates wearable art to encourage self love and promote the idea of being comfortable in one's own skin. Each piece is a work of art. Each piece narrates a story, albeit the eco-friendly, sustainable way. Onushshar upcycles and recycles materials like textiles, plastic, metals, wood and more to create handcrafted pieces under a zero waste manufacturing system.

The product range includes clothes (dresses and jackets), jewellery (earrings, hair accessories, rings and necklaces) and accessories (bags, scarves and keychains). The designs are elegant, artistic and versatile. Our personal favourites? When it comes to their apparel, definitely the 'Rose Garden Cropped Zero-Waste Jacket' made of tea-stained Taant fabric with hand embroidery (roses made of waste fabric and threads) done on it.

We also love the necklace collection inspired by different symbols of Bengal - dragonfly from the fields, texture of the Bay of Bengal water, Bengali rituals and festivals, windows of an old building, goddesses and more. The rose-themed earrings, rings and hair accessories are equally stunning, if not more. Also, watch out for the bags made of bamboo, wood and fabric (think tote bags with hand painted floral patterns inspired by the different flowers found in Bengal) as well as the block-printed stoles inspired by Jogindranath Sarkar's Bengali rhymes, lotus flowers in Hindu mythology, fishes and Anupam Roy's songs.
