The veins of West Bengal pulse with a deep connection to art, especially literature. Over the past decade, stand-up comedy has gained immense popularity as a modern reinterpretation of wit and satire. The bustling Chaiwala cafe served as inspiration for the Calcutta Comedy Company. Sukrit Poddar, the club's owner, and Anyaman Majumdar, the club's co-founder, came up with the concept for CCC at Chaiwala.
Majumdar's cheerful disposition serves as the cohesive force that holds the dark, 30-seater establishment together, while a yellow sign, laughter, and profound words illuminate the space. The seeds of this idea can be traced back to 2015, when a group of comedians started open mics at Chaiwala Cafe with the intention of giving local artists a stage in Kolkata. The COVID gap gave the co-founders the idea to create a venue for comedy and art that is centered around a sense of community. Since its founding on 23 October 2022, Calcuta Comedy Company has been curating shows in collaboration with regional artists with the goal of spotlighting both established local artists and up-and-coming performers.
Another platform offered by CCC are their poetry open mics, where people from all walks of life can express themselves in a language they are comfortable with. This is entertaining for the entire audience and fosters a safe environment for those taking part and attending. Whether you seek entertainment or want to entertain, a trip to the Calcutta Comedy Company is a must if you want to support and empower aspiring artists in Kolkata who are looking for a stage.
