It's also THE place where just about 1000 bucks can take you a long way! During Christmas, the entire area blooms in red, green and gold. And while you're picking your Christmas decorations from New Market, don't forget to stand in line for the best festive cakes from Nahoum & Sons.

Burrabazaar

If you're a first-time visitor to Kolkata, Bara Bazar is where you really get to see the city. It is hardly hyperbole to say that the name literally translates to "large market". Originally a small textile and yarn market in 1738, Sutanuti Haat has expanded into one of India's largest wholesale centres. In this labyrinth, business and culture coexist harmoniously. When you walk into Bara Bazar, time pauses and becomes a collection of micro-worlds, such as Chinipatti for sugar, Tulapatti for jute, and Dhotipatti for cotton. People believe that you can get anything here, anything! Chinese lanterns, fruits, souvenirs, and other dazzling and sparkling curios displayed at the many stores are not only a feast for the eyes but also make up for all those Pinterest-worthy old Calcutta with love postcard frames.

How To Reach: The nearest metro stations are MG Road metro station and Central station. After you exit the stations, you can either walk or take an auto-rickshaw. It's about 10-15 minutes away. There are numerous public buses, both AC and non-AC that you can take.

Itsy Bitsy

Popular art and craft supplies store Itsy Bitsy has a fantastic collection of art and craft essentials. Arm yourself with a glue gun and get packing those art pencils, sketchbooks, paints, colours and other craft kits here. If quilling piques your interest, then pick their quilling board, paper and tweezers; they are the best you can get. If your expertise lies in sketching, pick sketch pads (from watercolour-suitable to charcoal and pen) and dark charcoal, graphite, or white charcoal pencils from here. They are also stocking up on kneadable erasers, foam brushes, gold foil, and pastel and charcoal blenders – we could just go on, tbh!

Park Street

The street also features many landmark restaurants, including Flury's Bakery, Oly Pub, Trincas, and more. With their ideal blend of classic and modern eateries, these acclaimed restaurants in Park Street perfectly convey the street's colourful past and dynamic soul with every mouthful. Furthermore, food stalls will be set up by members of various communities existing in the city. Chinese, Parsi, and Anglo-Indian families in the area sell mouthwatering homemade savoury items. Stalls along the pavement are also set up by neighbourhood bakeries, such as Flurys teashop. To relish the holiday atmosphere, stroll about and pick up reindeer headgear, Santa caps, and devil horns. Be ready for congested areas and traffic jams.

How To Reach: The roads usually get shut down to manage the crowds. It's best to take local transport like the metro and buses and walk.

Bow Barracks

Bow Barracks, an Anglo-Indian neighbourhood in central Kolkata, is busy making last-minute arrangements a week before Christmas, including baking cakes, churning wine, and decorating their homes. The scenario is completely different, and people get a very homely vibe. There are no waiting lines or anybody to tell them to wait outside. Everyone here is welcome to participate in their Christmas celebrations and be treated with respect and equality. Most Anglo-Indian families choose to prepare their own cakes, though many depend on the neighbourhood roti-wala (breadman) and his pre-made cakes. They blend the ingredients at home and then take the mix to the neighbourhood bakery for baking. They deliver them to a huge oven in Colootola to bake, receiving the final product by evening. Fruitcake, salted beef, homemade wine, kull-kulls, and rose cookies are essential Christmas treats in the houses of Bow Barracks.

How To Reach: You can take a cab or take the metro to Central and walk for about 15 minutes.

House Of Kaji

If you’re looking to break the monotony of a colourless room, Kaji is the place to get the trendiest and hippest designs from all over the world. These are carefully curated pieces and collections that are a perfect blend of modern, chic designs and retro. A staircase wall leads to this huge store {1200 sq ft} with local products and those sourced from Italy, the UK and the US. Indian brands include the popular Chumbak, Happily Unmarried, Soda Pop and Paani Puri.
