Kolkata is off to a great start in 2018 with the inauguration of India’s first floating market at Patuli — here’s what you need to know.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Over 200 shops on over 100 boats, India and Kolkata’s first Bangkok-inspired floating market opened over the weekend at Patuli. Fruits, vegetables, fish and other produce are sold on the boats by vendors who moved out from the Patuli VIP market. You can even get garments and a haircut here!

The boats are connected by wooden pathways and are divided into sections depending on what they are selling and is 500 meters long and 60 meters wide.

Testing The Waters

The market is open to all through the day from about 6 am to 9 pm. There have been a couple of issues {measuring and weighing veggies on boats for instance, and then there are hygiene concerns} but the market otherwise seems to be functioning in full force.
