Kick for Liberty: A Football Walk

What's Happening

Calling all football fanatics! We know it's New Year time and you'll probably too hung over to get up so early in the morning but we still insist that you party a little less this year so you can wake up early and go for this super fun heritage walk where you get to learn about the history of how and why football occupies such a special place in every Kolkatan's heart.

In pre-Independent India, football matches against the English teams were seen as an extension of the freedom struggle against the British. Inequality and racism was prevalent but the Indian football clubs still gave a tough fight to their British counterparts. Those victories were a matter of national pride while the football field gave Indians the liberty to beat the English at their own game without being held against the colonial law.

Kickstart the new year by exploring the history of football in the city at this walk organised by Heritage Walk Calcutta on Wednesday, January 1. The walk will begin from outside the Mohun Bagan Club Tent. Why wait? Sign up now.

Pro-Tip

It's an early winter morning so make sure you carry all your woollens. Don;t forget your camera (Maidan early in the morning is a photographer's paradise!) as well as a bottle of water. Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes.
