Here's some interesting trivia for you. Did you know that the tradition of Christmas markets originally began in the German peaking areas of Europe back in the Middle Ages, before it spread to the other parts of the world? The Weihnachtsmarkt or the Christmas street markets mark the start of the weeks of Advent (the month-long countdown to Christmas!).
All thanks to the German Consulate in Kolkata, you can join in and ring in the countdown at the German Christmas market on December 2.
Sip on the traditional mulled wine (Glühwein) or on the special German Kaltenberg Beer listening to children sing carols or gift shopping at the handicrafts stalls put up by local NGOs. You may find the perfect Christmas gift, a gorgeous handmade stocking, and tree ornaments here.Stock up on packs of the traditional homemade plätzchen cookies (which literally means 'a little place' but comes from the word Platz meaning 'round flat cake'). And unabashedly sink your teeth on as many juicy bratwursts (German sausages) as you can!
Bring your tiny tots along to get dirty at the potter's corner and make their own angels. The Weihnachtsmann (Santa Claus) will also be visiting the market to greet them!
Another reason to hit it up without fail is the charity raffle competition. The winner gets to take back a beautiful Saregama Carvaan Gold! Other exciting gift hampers will also be there to be won.
