If you swear by pure vegetarian food, chances are you must have dropped in at Govinda's at least once. If not, read on as you've clicked on the right recommendation.
Owned by ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), the restaurant near Minto Park ISKCON temple has been serving authentic vegetarian food (minus onion and garlic) for decades. It has a pretty basic sit-in area where people can have lunch after visiting the temple (we did just that!).
Govinda's is famous for their south Indian dishes but they also serve north Indian and Chinese food, so no one's complaining. They have another outlet in Ballygunge, which also has a basic layout with wooden and round glass tables. Their Indian thali comes for INR 140 and they'll give you unlimited amount of roti, sabzi and rice! That's as basic as it gets!
Order a kabuli naan, Amritsari kulcha or pepper cheese kulcha, and you can break them piping hot while you dip in the paneer nawabdaar or paneer chatpata till you actually spill it on your clothes. Their lahori alu jeera, cheese malai kofta and makai veg jhal fry are equally tempting. The alu jeera is the right kind of spicy, with the pepper sharpening the taste even more.
Dosa lovers are in for a joy ride. Choose from the paper cheese masala dosa (which is our favourite), Mysore masala dosa and rawa masala dosa,. The paper cheese masala dosa is thinner than a napkin with cheese overflowing from all corners. For sweet endings you can order a sundae and leave with your tummies filled to the brim.
