The Calcutta Classical Guitar Society is back with the seventh edition of the legendary Calcutta International Classical Guitar Festival. This year, they’ll be celebrating classical guitar music from Latin America as the focus of the festival — think Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay and music from the similar regions.

It has been the largest festival in Asia and has hosted GFA winners, composers who are in fact living legends, Grammy award winners including Nikita Koshkin, Roland Dyens and David Russell.

Tell Me More

The festival is on at ICCR from December 15 to 17, with classical guitar acts lined up from 5pm onwards including award-winning classical guitarists like Marcin Dylla from Poland who has been hailed by The Washington Post as “among the most gifted guitarists on the planet”. Then there is Le Meastrio, a band of three individual guitarists Pierre Louyriac, Pierre Bernon and Symon Savignoni — classical guitar, flamenco guitar and jazz guitar! Bernon got the classical guitar gold medal from Montpellier conservatory, and has spent a long time traveling around the world to learn Latin, Slgerian and gypsy music. He has played with musicians like Aretha Franklin. Symon Savignoni is gyspsy jazz guitarist from a big family of musicians.  Pierre Louyriac grew up in a gypsy quarter of Montpellier.

There are many more — Pavel Steidl, Johannes Mollar, Paco Renteria, Duo Umbral and lastly, Trilogy —featuring our very own Subhen Chatterjee, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Amyt Datta.
