People’s Study Circle is an autonomous study circle based in Kolkata. It was formed in April 2017 by a group of individuals who wanted to create an independent study space that is free from any political alliance.
The study circle aims to be an easily accessible platform for academics, activists, artists and researchers to come together and share their thoughts on issues concerning the society. People’s Study Circle is associated with and initiated by the Kolkata-based People’s Film Collective.
They organise monthly study classes and annual workshops. They also conduct surveys and fact-finding teams within West Bengal to investigate major issues concerning the working class. The main speakers in their past events included eminent personalities like writer and Columbia University professor Partha Chatterjee and JNU historian Tanika Sarkar. It is basically for the politically conscious, the academics and anyone who wants to engage in a discussion about pressing matters in society.
Membership fee is INR 100 per month for working members and INR 50 per month for students. There is no fixed venue and the circle keeps moving from place to place. The members are notified by email/sms prior to the sessions.
