People’s Study Circle is an autonomous study circle based in Kolkata. It was formed in April 2017 by a group of individuals who wanted to create an independent study space that is free from any political alliance.

    What Is It?

The study circle aims to be an easily accessible platform for academics, activists, artists and researchers to come together and share their thoughts on issues concerning the society. People’s Study Circle is associated with and initiated by the Kolkata-based People’s Film Collective {read about them here}.

They organise monthly study classes and annual workshops. They also conduct surveys and fact-finding teams within West Bengal to investigate major issues concerning the working class. The main speakers in their past events included eminent personalities like writer and Columbia Univ professor Partha Chatterjee and JNU historian Tanika Sarkar.

    Who Is It For?

The politically conscious, the academic and basically anyone who wants to engage in discussion about pressing matters in society.

    Anything Else?

Unfortunately, membership isn’t open to all. You have to register to become a member of the study circle to attend the sessions. You can do this by writing to peoplestudycircle@gmail.com, filling up a membership form and committing to participate for a minimum period of four months.

Membership fees are INR 200 per month for working members and INR 100 per month for students.

There is no fixed venue and the circle keeps moving from place to place. The members are notified by email/sms prior to the sessions.
