Kalighat
One of the major Shakti pithas, Kalighat is thronged by people all round the year. But this is the time when the temple is thronged by hundreds of devotees. There's also a crowd-puller pandal in the area on Kali Temple Road and every year they come up with unique themes.
Shoshan Kali (Shamshan Kali)
Happening inside the Keoratala Shamshan or burning ghat, this is one of the oldest Kali pujos in Kolkata and is a must-visit if you want to tick off the major ones from your checklist. The ambience in itself is a little spooky, yet adventurous. You will see people chanting goddess Kali's name in the middle of the night, when the aarti takes place. Unlike other places, the idol here is black in colour instead of blue.
ABS Sporting
This 65-year-old pujo is more than 65 years old and is famous for worshipping Chamunda Kali (known to be the most fearsome avatar of the goddess). If you are coming from Chetla side, it will be on your right just before getting on the Durgapur bridge. The moment you enter, you will be welcomed by a mighty 30-ft high idol, which is equally imposing in its presence.
24 Pally
24 Pally's pujo on Peary Mohan Road is known for their Dashamahavidya pujo or the 10 forms of Kali. You will get to see different idols depicting these forms such as the Daskhina Kali (age old village diety of Bengal resembling a girl), the Adi Kali and the Chinnamasta (the one without a head). Myths, we tell you!
Hazar Haat Kali Mandir
This one has to be in the list for its unique depiction of the Kali myth. This avatar of Kali is called Sahasrabhuja, which means one with a thousand hands. This pujo also holds significance because the idol is decorated with a beautiful red saree with abhay mudra.
