Kolkata -- the city of the yellow taxi, phuchka, sandesh, roshogolla, Rabindranath, Durga Puja, Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Dada and Didi -- has always been a boiling pot of multiculturalism. Be it the bylanes of Kumartuli where you can see craftsmen busy making idols all the year round, or taking a poetic boat ride on the Hooghly River, it always purges the soul.
And now, the City of Joy has brought great news of joy to its inhabitants. Kolkata has grabbed the numero uno spot in the ranking of the safest cities in the country. Being labelled as the safest city in the country for the second time in a row has been possible only because of the lowest rate of offences recorded in the city. The National Crimes Record Bureau has released a report of 2018 where Kolkata has scored 152.2, on a scale used to measure known crimes per 100,000 people. Closely following on its heels are cities like Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai. With the bars now set really high, the Kolkata Police Commissioner has said they'll strive even more to work towards keeping it the safest city in future. A real hurrah moment for us Kolkatans!
