Mark The Date: Head To This 4-Day Indie Film Festival

If cinema and social issues happen to be your cup of tea, drink up at the 5th Kolkata People’s Film Festival at Jogesh Mime Academy this New Year!

People’s Film Collective {PFC}, in association with Jogesh Mime Academy, is hitting the fifth Kolkata People’s Film Festival. A four-day event, it will screen a range of eclectic movies and documentaries on socio-economic issues, gender issues and much more.

The film festival itself is a non-sponsored, people-funded initiative by PFC. Formed in 2013, the People’s Film Collective strongly espouses the notion of “people’s cinema with people’s support” and purports to be an autonomous, cultural-political collective. The collective has a powerful belief in the power of films as a weapon of pedagogy and the success of the previous editions of the festival are a testament to this.

Anyone with an interest in the Indian independent cinema as well as those who would like to experience an entirely indigenous and crowd-funded film festival.

Because this is a by the people, for the people and of the people cinematic experience you wouldn’t want to miss! There are a number of documentaries worth watching. La Mana, a 26-minute docu by Tarun Bhartiya, is a lens into Khasi society and sets about unravelling the issues of gender, matrilineality and related socio-economic issues. Another intriguing documentary, The Running Hawker, is a film shot over three years that follows the life of a few hawkers in South Bengal, in the backdrop of a thriving, globalised world — which is in the contrast to the undocumented, informal sector to which the hawkers belong.

Slated to be held from 11 am to 9 pm daily at Jogesh Mime Academy auditorium, this event is absolutely free and encourages viewership at all levels. Check out their Facebook page for further details.
