Spend Christmas a little differently by attending this Mohiner Ghoraguli tribute concert at Nazrul Manch.

What Is It?

Mohiner Ghoraguli is the stuff of 70’s nostalgia. They were India’s first rock band {and they were based out of Calcutta!}. Now ES Live! of house Ei Samay is bringing to the city a first-of-its-kind tribute to Gautam Chattopadhyay, front man of India’s rock music pioneer Mohiner Ghoraguli.

The music concert, set to take place at Nazrul Mancha on December 25 from 5.30pm onwards, will feature a line-up of popular artists and bands from Bengal to reminisce about the music from this legendary band a good number of Calcuttans have grown up listening to.

Who Is It For?

If you have memories attached to growing up with their music, this tribute concert would definitely be up your alley. And even if you haven’t heard of them before, this would be a great way to reminisce what Calcutta was grooving to back in the ‘70s when regional indie rock music and band culture was making a mark in India.

The concert will feature songs of Mohiner Ghoraguli, Gautam Chattyopadhyay, Subrata Ghosh and Joyjit Lahiri {Garer Math}, Arunendu Das, Surajit Chatterjee, Dibyo Mukhopadhyay, and Pradip Chattyopadhyay.

Why Should I Go?

Established in the 1970s when Bengali music comprised mainly of commercial film songs, the lyrics and the musical style {which many people like to label ‘Jazz Baul’} of Gautam Chattopadhyay were radically new. They were of a very personal and social nature much like the urban folk movement led by Bob Dylan in the 60s. And their music resonated so much that they have been covered by numerous artists through the span of time {think, ‘Prithibi’ta Naki’, which echoed how television creates urban alienation}.

This concert will have some of the most popular artists of this era pay tribute to the iconic band, including Rupam Islam, Debojyoti Mishra, Bonnie Chakraborty, Pota, Sidhu, Anindya Bose {Sohor}, Poroma Banerjee, Rituparna Das, Ritika Sahani, Dibya Mukherjee, Amraham Muzumdar and orchestra, Usha Uttup, Anupam Roy, Antara Chaudhury, Soumitra Roy and Raju Das Baul.

Iconic Kolkata bands like Krosswindz, Lakkhichhara and Chandrabindoo will also perform. This is not to be missed!
