What Makes It Awesome

Motherland is a cosy store located in an old house tucked away in the lanes near Charuchandra college on Lake Place Road — look out for the striking green door and windows (on the left just before the college).

The store stocks carefully chosen handicrafts and clothing sourced from Bengal and parts of South India. The tastefully done interiors stock a whole lot of stuff you could pick up for your home, for your wardrobe or as gifts for someone special. Look out for the colourful puppets which double as towel hangers.

If you have been looking for sarees that stand out, they have a handpicked range of cotton and silks along with blouses. Also check out the stoles — especially the soft Bengal cottons with funky embroidery. Their jewellery range has a lot of variety — from hand printed neck pieces to silver and soapstone earrings. Many of the stuff here will make for great gifts. We found cane bottle holders and cute little batuas made out of gaamchha.

They also stock organic spices and honey from The Last Forest, a brand based out of Kotagiri and Coonoor. The honey, sourced from the Nilgiris, comes in a gorgeous, cylindrical packaging with interesting art.
