Winter is for cosying up with bae over warm coffee and warmer music, and what is Calcutta winter without its host of classic music concerts? So that you don’t have to, we at LBB have compiled a list of all the classical music concerts lined up for December.

Chowdhury House Music Conference

Keep your dates free from December 22 to 24 if you want to attend the 4th Chowdhury House Music Conference. The venue? Chowdhury House, 5/1, Gariahat Road, Kolkata – 700019.

Some of the artists you can witness creating magic with their music would be vocalist Pt. Venkatesh Kumar from the Gwalior Gharana, Lalit J. Rao of Agra Gharana, sitarist Josh Fienburg, flute maestro Nityananda Haldipur, danseuse Sushmita Banerjee among many, many others. The concerts will start on 11am and go on till 8pm on all three days of the conference.

Swara Samrat Festival:

After the success of five editions, the sixth season of Swara Samrat Festival is back on December 16 and 17 at Nazrul Manch, featuring some of the most sought after legends and maestros of Indian classical music and dance. Expect the stage to be lit up by artists like Kaushiki Chakraborty, Rakesh Chaurasia, Ustad Zakir Khan, the Gundecha Brothers and many more. There’ll also be a Hindustani and Carnatic jugalbandi. Naad Brahma

In the organisers’ own words, “seek your participation in a rare and live performance of the cosmic confluence of kriya yog techniques with Indian classical music, aimed at healing the rarest diseases of the body and mind, that threatens our human existence today”.

It is slated to take place on New Year’s Eve December 31, from 4pm to 9pm at Vidya Mandir. Organised by Hariharananda KriyaYog Dhyan Kendra, the line-up includes Pundit Shri Ajoy Chakraborty, Pundit Shri Shubhankar Banerjee, and Suchismita Chatterjee and Debopriya Chatterjee aka Flute Sisters (they were Pundit Harisprasad Chaurasia’s most beloved disciples).

Bengal Dhrupad Festival

The Bengal Dhrupad Festival is all set to kickstart on December 15 at Jogesh Mime Academy till December 17. The festival will include dhrupad concerts by prominent artists as well as a dhrupad workshop. You can attend the workshop on December 16 at 10am, the topic of the workshop being ‘Introduction to the Grama Murcchana System and the Shastra of Dhrupad in the Dagar Tradition’, conducted by Pt. Ashish Sankrityayan. Some of the artists you can expect to witness live are Shri Carsten Wicke, Shri Sandip Mallick, and Professor Kaberi Karl. For more information, visit the Facebook page.
