Prepare to be mesmerised by this unique art installation set up to celebrate CIMA art gallery’s 25th anniversary.

What Is It?

If you visit Gem Cinema at Entally anytime between 11am to 7pm till February 28, get prepared to witness some of the most stunning art, sculpture and installation set-ups by some of the best contemporary artists of the time. ‘Response: Installations & New Media' is not the typical art gallery exhibition, but is a showcase of modern art in the backdrop of a beautiful old cinema hall.

Gem Cinema is an abandoned single screen building which was once a popular destination for cine-goers in the city.

Some of the artists whose work you’ll see here are Manas Acharya, Samir Aich, CAMP, Debasis Barui, Jayashree Chakraborty, Paul Holmes, and Sukanta Majumder.

Who Is It For?

Art enthusiasts, this is the exhibition you should tick off your bucket list if you wish to see the best of Kolkata’s art scene. You’ll be stunned to see how well the artists have utilised the primitive aesthetics of the old cinema hall and have created such a haunting ambience with lights, music and of course, art.

Installations, paintings, sculptures, soundscapes, 3D imagery, even virtual or augmented reality — since the theme for the exhibition is to connect the past with the future, you’ll witness a lot of fusion between the aesthetics of the old theatre and the futuristic feel of the art showcased.

Why Should I Go?

If you’re an art lover, and if you love the idea of going around a worn-down theatre and looking at a variety of artworks and installations, definitely give this is a visit. For zero entry fee, you get to witness some of the most brilliant artistic minds at work. Every art work is accompanied with a bio of the artist as well as a small brief explaining the concept of the artwork. The best part is, most installations are interactive, so you’ll never get bored, instead you’ll leave with an afterthought.

Anything Else?

To have a good, immersive experience, do take an hour or so at hand when you visit. And if you’ve ever been curious about how the old single-screen cinema halls looked like before multiplexes took over, we strongly recommend you visit this exhibition. Most old theatres are out of operation and don’t allow visitors, hence going to Gem Cinema for the exhibition would be a wonderful way to explore the culture of single screen theatres as well. You’ll see the old projection room, the popcorn kiosk, balcony seating, old celluloid and film stock — you’ll be enthralled, we assure you.
