The summer season is fast approaching and soon Kolkata is going to get super hot and humid. But, the good part is that you can always escape to a hill station to get rid of the heat for a while. And this time, instead of choosing the usual mainstream destinations, plan the perfect getaway to these offbeat towns in the eastern Himalayas and spend some time in tranquility amidst nature away from the noise and pollution of the city.

Mongpu

This lesser-known town located in the Kalimpong district is known for its cinchona plantations, the barks of which are used to extract a medicinal drug used to treat malaria. It is also known for Rabindra Bhavan, Rabindranath Tagore’s summer residence that has now been turned into a museum comprising original artworks, handwritten poems and verses as well as the mahogany desk and bed used by the Nobel laureate. Also, spot 150 varieties of orchids at the Mungpoo Cymbidium Orchid Park and visit the mesmerising Kalijhora Waterfall that falls from a height of 550 metres to meet the Teesta River.

Ichhe Gaon

This serene hamlet situated at an altitude of 5,800 feet is one of Kalimpong’s many hidden gems. Surrounded by pine forests and conifer trees, this beautiful township lights up like fireflies at night. It’s a sight to behold—captivating and a treat for the eyes. The place boasts of scenic trekking routes that lead to picturesque viewpoints. While you are there, make a short trip to Ramitey Dara for a jaw-dropping view of Kanchenjunga and the Teesta River. Also, don’t forget to visit the renowned Sangchen Dorjee Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries located in Kalimpong district.

Sittong

This cluster of villages located in Kurseong is the perfect place to visit if you wish to spend some time in the lap of nature. Yes, there aren’t any fancy shopping places or eateries or luxury accommodations here and, honestly, you won’t really miss them when you see the pristine natural beauty the place has to offer. Enjoy beautiful views of the Himalayan peaks and the Teesta River. Visit the sprawling tea gardens, waterfalls, and the orange orchards. Sittong boasts of different species of birds making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Go on hikes, forest trails, and low-altitude treks.

Rishyap

This tiny hamlet in Kalimpong boasts of dense forests, mesmerising sunsets, and rare wildlife. Go wildlife spotting at Neora Valley National Park, catch a glimpse of the majestic Kanchenjunga range from the top of the village, admire the blooming rhododendrons and orchids, marvel at the snow-capped peaks, and definitely stop by the Changey Waterfall. One of the must-visit places here is Tiffindara, an uphill trek trail through pine, birch and fir forests, rhododendrons and birds. The sunrise and sunset with panoramic views of the snow-covered Himalayas are breathtaking. Lamahatta

Developed as an eco-tourism hub in 2012, this tiny village near Darjeeling is surrounded by pine forests and offers breathtaking views of Mount Kanchenjunga. Lamahatta—the name of the village translates to a ‘monk’s hermitage’ in English. The hill station is mostly inhabited by tribes like Sherpas, Yalmos, Dukpas, Bhutias, and Tamangs with cattle rearing and farming being their main source of income or livelihood. Take in the beauty and tranquility the place offers, go for nature walks in the jungle, visit the Lamahatta Eco Park, enjoy stunning views of mountain peaks and rivers, and enjoy the hospitality of the locals while you’re here.

Tinchuley

A small hamlet located in Darjeeling, Tinchuley means Three Ovens in English or Teen Chullah in Hindi because the place is surrounded by three hilltops that look like ovens or chullahs. The hill station is known for World Wide Federation’s initiative to assist 17 families in developing a model organic village that practises modern farming, floriculture methods, vermiculture, and other such projects. Tinchuley is known for its orange orchards, tea estates, gorgeous sunrise views, and trekking routes. The Tinchuley Monastery is a must-visit. Also, the views of the Teesta River from here are a treat for the eyes.

Lolegaon

This small Lepcha village is one of the most famous hill stations in Kolkata with a population of just about 5,000 people. It is located at the extreme end of the Himalayan range at a height of 1,675 meters offering breathtaking and jaw-dropping 360-degrees of the entire Kanchenjunga range! This is one view that you just cannot miss! Go trekking, birdwatching, and canopy walking through forests. Spot rare birds and beautiful orchids here.
