Head to Kolkata Centre for Creativity on May 18 for a very special and unique workshop on the art of making Shola, also known as sola pith or the Indian cork.
Don't know what it is? Shola is basically a milky-white sponge-wood carved into delicate and beautiful objects of art. Mainly practiced in the districts of Burdwan, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Nadia and Hooghly, shola is used to make artefacts especially the traditional ornate headgear of the bridegroom in West Bengal. You can see the some of the finest and most amazing craftsmanship during festivals on the statues of gods and goddesses. Grown in the marshy waterlogged areas of West Bengal, Assam and in the eastern marshy Gangetic plains, sola is used for the massive decorative backdrop during Durga Puja.
So what are you waiting for? Take part in this one-of-a-kind workshop and learn something new.
