Shortcut
What Is It?
City-based designer Paromita Banerjee has come out with her festive line for Pujo and Diwali using indigenous textiles like the classic jamdani woven with gold, handwoven fabrics in silk and luxe fabrics like natural-dyed ajrakh blockprinted over reams of silk.
Banerjee was among the designers actress Nandita Das wore during Cannes Film Festival in May this year {you can read about it here}.
Tell Me More
The Bengal jamdani has been an USP of sorts for Paromita – her handwoven ones use many traditional motifs like the Tree of Life, kadam and the paisleys using contemporary colour palettes and contemporary silhouttes. You will look gorgeous in the he cuts and flows of the angarakha and long ghera kurtas, the panelled skirts {which can be worn as lehengas}, and the reversible double-sided jackets {great for the light winters ahead}. Prices for these begin from INR 4,000 and goes upto INR 18,000.
The jamdani range includes many sarees in indigo and gold and also linens in solid colour blocks, silk etc.
You can visit CIMA Art Gallery in Sunny Park to check out her exclusive line of her silk jamdani sarees at their annual “Art in Life” showcase which is on till September 27. The prices begin from INR 8,000 and goes upto INR 21,000 for the heavier jamdanis.
Anything Else?
Banerjee also has traditional fine muslin jamdani sarees for around INR 12,000. These will remind you of the days when your grandmother or mother would wear light soft cotton jamdanis in white with subtle coloured summer butis.
She’ll soon be launching an exclusive line of upcycled jhola bags, stoles and handmade khaatas {notebooks} for Pujo – all made with an upcycled range of fabrics.
